Diesel additives

Featured Replies

I have owned diesel cars for the last 25 years, and am used to adding injector cleaner to the fuel periodically. I now own a Ford which requires Adblue, but have read that Ford do not recommend the addition of any fuel additives. What do members recommend? I know that Wynns also do an anti-crystallisation fluid for Adblue diesels. Would welcome advice and experienced views from owners of Ford vehicles with Adblue diesel engines.

I use the Wynns in my BMW, that's a good start. Make sure you put it in before you fill so it mixes better.

I also use Archoil AR6900 D-Max in my BMW's fuel tank and it runs like a dream

Recommended 1ml per litre but I use 2ml per litre in mine, I couldn't get over the difference between 1ml & 2ml so I've stuck with 2ml

Again, dose before fuelling

Don't waste you money on expensive diesel if you're using Archoil, it's just not needed, just use good quality. I only use Tesco as the station has a high turn around

Not sure if it's just the wording of the OP but there might be some confusion here.

Adblue is not a fuel additive. Fuel additives and Adblue additives need to kept completely separate. Don't put either one in the wrong hole.

I think he's on about both from what I was getting.

Although, you know my history!!😀

Apologies for the confusion. Diesel and Adblue must be kept separate, it my main query is that Ford do not recommend ANY additives to either Adblue or Diesel. My experience with diesels is that regular use of additives to clean the injectors guarantees a long life. In my experience cheap supermarket diesel is to be avoided.

I’m used to using Wynns Diesel Injector cleaner, as it is pre measured for a tankful of diesel. I’m a bit wary about Archoil as I am unsure how you would dispense the correct amount from a large container. How do you measure each application?

The archoil has a gauge in the dispensing area in 5ml increments up to 25ml

You won't regret it, mine runs like a dream.

Really smooth and really quiet

Second this, I know we are always subject to a bit of bias when we know we’ve added something. But I am almost certain there’s been a slight reduction in mechanical noise, since I’ve ran half a tank of Archoil through. I don’t think I’ll bother with 6400 even. The 6900 has almost certainly made a difference. With the prices of fuel lately, I’ll be just using standard Shell diesel and adding this to every tank. Miller’s smelled very similar, and had good results with it in the past, but I am an Archoil convert now

Hmm. Not convinced. The noise a Diesel makes is very much affected by the combustion of the fuel. A more volatile fuel will ignite earlier, advancing the engine and making a different noise. Old XUD diesels which are strong, old fashioned and mechanical used to be much improved by putting a gallon of Jet-A1 into a tankful of regular DERV as it cleaned the varnish from the injectors. Went like a wounded snail but ran very quietly until the next fill up. Somebody of my acquaintance filled my BX with 64 litres of the stuff once and the performance and starting were diabolical. It stank of paraffin, too and I was most concerned about getting noticed but when it finally ran out some two weeks later, the car did another eight miles per gallon when refilled with proper fuel. Nowadays, If I get an old Diesel, I put a litre of petrol in with a tankful of DERV just once. It seems to help and the engine is noticeably quieter while it is running through but returns to normal noise once it has done so.

About what in particular?

The noise can also be caused by the injectors opening and closing on modern high pressure systems

My engine (obviously) still sounds like a diesel but it's so much quieter and smoother

Not convinced that the reduction in engine noise is anything other than a temporary effect of adding more volatility to the fuel.

Or the extra lubricant that is missing from low sulphur diesel

Yep, another possible contributing factor right there mate.

Plus as you probably, cetane doesn’t increase fuel volatility inherently -which is how quickly it evaporates into a vapour essentially. It shortens ignition delay after injection, lowering the activation energy before the diesel ignites. And that’s just talking about cetane, only. Which is just one part of the additive.

Anyways, we are sure it’s making a difference. It’s seemed to have peaked after sticking a whole tank of fuel through it.

Of course anything is going to be temporary, if it’s not in the fuel, then it’s no longer going to be doing the job. None of these are sold as a permanent fix.
