Noise from new brake discs

Featured Replies

Hi,

Leading on from putting new front discs on I'm wondering if anybody has experience of this problem.

I had to put new brake pads in about a 1000 miles ago to get it through it's MOT. I noticed the disc were nearly down to the limit so bought new Eicher disc and put them on earlier in the week with the existing pads.

The brakes work as they should but there is now a "whiring" noise ( not grinding) when they are applied?

Comparing our other Fiestas discs the Eicher ones seem to have a hatching like pattern on them (see pic) whereas the other Fiestas ones have faint grooves like a vinyl record? Is this the cause?

Question is will the pads and discs bed in or is it something to worry about?

Personally I would have done the pads at the same time as any disc change notter the tread on the current oads

I didn't want to change the pads again as they have only done about 1000 miles.

Problem is they have bedded into the old discs.

Hopefully someone can confirm this but it what I would have done

Never use used brake pads on new brake discs.

As already said the brake pads had bedded in on the old discs and now have an uneven contact pattern on the new brake discs. This is clearly visible on the picture. During the bedding in process the brake pads show increased wear until they match the surface of the discs and form a hard layer.

Once bedded in and the hard layer is formed, the brake pads will no longer adapt to the new perfectly straight surface of the new brake discs.

Right now you have 2 possibilities:

1: Replace the brake pads.

2: Remove the hard layer from the existing brake pads. This can be done by sanding using coarse grit sandpaper. However, you have to make sure to remove an even amount to keep the friction surface 100% parallel with the metal backplate. Afterwards the pads must be cleaned/degreased using brake cleaner and must be treated like new brake pads. In other words: they will need to bed in again onto the new brake discs.

Thanks guys. An expensive lesson learned 😔

At least I don't have to battle get the blasted caliper retaining bolts back in again 👍
