Control arms

Featured Replies

Or wishbones to those of us old enough to know better. Mine arrived today ready to be fitted for the Controle Technique next Wednesday. The old ones weren't bad, to be fair but I suspected that one might be slightly bent or a bush past its best. The plan was to replace the bushes with Polyurethane ones but the sheer aggro of trying to get the balljoint out of the hub meant I needed to do a quick rethink so I bought some new arms instead. They were due on Saturday but La Poste doesn't have a word with the urgency of mañana so they arrived at half past two. My neighbour has a garage in the village and I have the ok to use it so by four it was up on stands and by six forty five, I was washing my hands with the new ones sworn in and all the bolts in but still loose, ready to tighten once the wheels are back on and the car is on ramps. The church clock is chiming seven so it must be time for a cold beer. Santé!

Where are the pictures of this job and its French idyll?

There are plenty of guides all over YouTube. I don't post pictures online as I don't know how to nor do I want to know how to.

Well, it didn't go well. I tightened everything up with the car on the ground and took it for a test drive. The steering wheel settled at five degrees to the left, the car pulled left and the torque steer was scary. I wondered if I had dislodged a driveshaft so I pulled it all apart again, not that. i slipped the bolts and bounced the car up and down before retightening. Slightly better. Measure the camber. Right 0.3 negative, left 1.5. That explains it. Wishbone tolerances. I probably have enough if I slip the hub to strut bolts, strut top nuts and a little designer violence to get it. a bit closer but an adjustable camber bolt will equalise both sides so I shall do that before panicking. The wishbones came from two different suppliers. Neither is faulty because each set the camber within factory tolerance but the cumulative tolerance is out and once the camber angles are equalised, I shall then have something that can go for alignment.
