Wetbelt change - funny smell afterwards

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just picked my Fiesta 1.0 up from the garage after getting the belt done. It runs great and I don't see/hear anything wrong with it after the job besides the smell. For example, after driving for a bit, at a standstill or after parking I can smell a very strong, potent chemical/mechanical burning smell and theres very light smoke coming from the engine bay, only noticable under light. It is most noticable when the cooling fan comes on, seems to project the smell around the car. It doesn't smell like burning rubber. I am hoping it is just some oil residue that may have dripped burning off with the heat from the engine. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I have only done about 25 miles since picking it up. Just worried a seal or something isn't right and there is a leak somewhere. I don't see any visible puddles/evidence of fluids however on the top of the gearbox it looks slightly damp and the fan does have a slight bit of moisture on the top. Just seeing if anyone else has a similar issue, I plan on emailing the garage if it persists. (The job was done at a trusted high end garage using all genuine parts).

Yes, take it back.

Get them to check it out and clean off the residue (if that's what it is)

I would get them to check it. When mine was done there was a slight oil burning smell for a few days afterwards (I could smell it inside the car) but I could see it was just where oily hands had been on the exhaust etc during the work. I did check there was nothing leaking or dripping under the car and after a few days the smell went away. Had it done over a year ago and all fine.
