cruise control how does it work query

Featured Replies

Can anyone help me out with this query, as some may have read I've added a few driver Assistance things to my car, adaptive cruise control, pre collision detection, front parking and rear parking sensors, active park assist and BLiss recently.

Today I noticed when on normal cruise (not adaptive or intelligent) when i set it to say 30mph... I cruise along at 30.. if I then go down a steep hill the car brakes to keep it at 30 BUT before I started modding the car and I was on regular factory fitted cruise the vehicle would roll down a hill and speed up and I would have to brake in order to keep it at the set speed, only thing car would do is accelerate if I was slowing down because of a steeper incline.

Is that expected behaviour or have I enabled something in Forscan to do that? I don't mind it to be honest saves getting a speeding ticket I guess but wasn't sure if that was a Ford factory feature on the fiesta??

The reason Im not sure if it's me (it probably is) as quite a few braking options, parking and cruise options in forscan needed to be set before everything worked.

No, standard cruise control will allow you to speed up when going down a hill.

It may be an embedded safety feature of adaptive cruise control activation

Thanks, it could be that. I do remember seeing an option for front brake assist which I thought was the same as rear brake assist and required for the BLISS system so car stops you reversing out of a space Into cars.

I guess I will have to go find the options disable 1 at a time then test again before re enabling and moving on to the next thing.

I did look in my 2018 manual as I have a paper one with the vehicle and it does seem to suggest that I will roll down a hill and pick up speed just like you say.

I quite like the feature in that if I set it to say 32 I won't get a speeding ticket.

When adaptive is turned on though I can pick up speed down a hill I less it detects a car in front.

It's all exciting stuff lol.. I just want to make sure my car is OEM and not having features from other models

Slightly off topic, but, I know a stretch of road on the M74 in Scotland where you slow down when you're visibly going downhill. Last time I went along it, vehicle weight was around 23 ton and it dropped off the limiter to around 40-45 MPH. 🤔 On next to nothing downhill inclines/declines; which ever is the correct term. it happily went way over the limiter. 😂

It's easy to test what I'm talking about, set it to say 30 on a 30mph then flick the cruise DOWN to like 20 and car brakes.

That sounds like a cool feature to be fair

Yeah I don't mind it, would just be nice to know how I've managed to turn it on because it's no even in the manual for fiestas. I've looked in mine and the newer 2022 version manual.

I've given up on the intelligent adaptive cruise and turned the option on the cluster menu off as I can't get that to work either even though I have everything that the function needs

Ok so update after testing this weekend, doesn't matter if adaptive cruise or regular cruise ( I can switch between both on cluster menu ) my car brakes to keep it within the max speed I have set which seems contrary to what my manual says.

My current manual reads the same and that's what the car does, though its only "normal" cruise. My manual only has that note for "normal" cruise, though.

I have noticed this however. In my old paper manual for my 2018 ST-L X in the adaptive cruise section it said:

"Hilly Condition Usage

Select a lower gear when the system is active in situations such as prolonged downhill driving on steep slopes, for example in mountainous areas. The system needs additional engine braking in these situations to reduce the load on the brak system to prevent it from overheating.

Note: A tone sounds and the system turns off if it applies brakes for an extended period of time. This allows the brakes to cool. The system operates after the brakes cool. "

So adaptive does apply the brakes, which figures. It appears you've activated it on "normal" also, somehow.

I will have to check the settings again, I've looked through them several times now and it's not very obvious if it's been activated by mistake. Only things brake related I've turned on is pre collision, post collision, adaptive cruise (which can brake to maintain distance) and that's it. If I've done anything else it must have sounded related to those.
