Does my feista have a wet belt?

Featured Replies

Hi. I’m considering buying my fiesta and the end of my pcp deal. I’ve heard the cost of a wet belt is £1000+ but I’ve got no idea how to check. Fiesta 68 plate 1.0 ecoboost Titanium X automatic.

please can someone advise? This would be a huge cost to me so I may be better just trading it in. Thank you

Hi,

Your car almost certainly has the old wetbelt engine. Fiesta didn't get the chain version that early.

However, in this case it doesn't matter which of the two engines you have. The later chain version still uses a wetbelt for the oil pump which is also due for replacement at the same age and will cost roughly the same.

So trading in sounds like the best idea. Just make sure you can buy something else without a wetbelt for the budget you have first.

Absolutely. We don't know what the budget is or what other cars are under consideration. The Puma has the same oil pump belt issues of course.

(Of course, even "dry belt" engines still require a change at some point as specified by the respective manufacturer, should be a lot less costly though!)

The VW Polo and related Skoda Fabia, Seat Ibiza and Audi A1 are all available with auto and no wet belt.

Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall with the 1.2 "Puretech" engine are wet belt up to around 2023 (I believe), chain after that.

Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz also seem fairly safe bets.

This list from "Honest John" is not 100% but not a bad rough guide for starters:

Not to scare you but it's even more important to change the belts on your car as you are an automatic.

Both manual and automatics have wet cam belt and a wet oil pump belt, but the automatic has a very long oil pump belt due to it having a balancer shaft in the engine.

The oil pump belt has a tensioner, which is what fails early and what is the basis of the recall in the USA (but not Europe).

If the car is in good condition and you like it then get it done ASAP, if not get rid of it

We have two 1.0 Auto Fiestas, a 68 and a 19 and plan to have them done this year as they are very low mileage.
