Steering wheel vibration issues.. cant figure it out.

Featured Replies

So I posted a few months ago about getting some new ford alloys as the stock ones are made of butter and were badly warped and corroded. Anyhow, got the new alloys, had them fitted to some new tyres through blackcircles (Apparently balanced as I paid for that, but turns out the garage didnt balance, only one single weight on the alloy, so I had to spend another £40 elsewhere to balance them) I've changed the spring and shock assembly in 2024, droplinks in 2025 and just before the rebalance I put on a new inner and outer tie rod as well as a whole new control arm. I haven't replaced the bushings on the front subframe bar thingy yet, but otherwise it's all been done.

I had it tracked after I did the tie rods and got the wheels balanced, but Im still getting quite a lot of vibration around 50-70. If I go higher than 70, say around 80-90 it seems to mellow out a little and isn't so aggressive.

I can't seem to figure out what is causing the wobble. I don't feel any oddness when breaking, so I doubt it's the breaks. My only other two culprits are the affordable hubcentric 15mm spacers (The wheel rubs the break caliper as its made for newer fiestas, doh otherwise I'd have it stock) And the wheel bearing as I've never done them. I will check the wheel bearing maybe later on if I get some time with a wobble test, but what else could it be? I'm really not looking forward to changing the wheel bearing, should've ordered some new skf bearings when I got my other bits in. Is there anything I can do to make it easier on myself that isn't going to a garage to have it done?

Im in two minds about either taking off the knuckle and pressing it out or using a pressing kit to push it out while on the car.

The wheel bearings will not cause this vibration. If the wheel bearings would have been worn that bad to cause a vibration, they would have made a lot of noise and also cause the vibration at other speeds.

You should perform the following checks:

1: Check the hubs for axial and radial runout.
2: Check the spacers for proper centration onto the hub (no axial play between the hub and the spacer and between the spacer and the wheel).
3: Check the spacers for axial and radial runout.
4: Check the tires for radial runout/eccentricity.
5: Check all suspension parts for wear and excessive play.
6: Check the driveshafts for wear and excessive play.
7: Check the driveshaft support bearing.

Apart from checking those it is also strongly recommended to try a different set of wheels/tyres without any spacers. If that fixes the vibration the problem is caused by the new wheels/tyres or spacers.

Thanks for that.

The bearings are at least 75k miles old. But I will say that when I wobble tested the wheel there was loads of places, but since changing the tie rods and control arm, it's near very stiff. So that's a good sign all suspension seems good, it's all new apart from springs, shocks and drop links.

Sadly I only have access to my badly buckled alloys and worn tyres on the original wheels. Can't really afford a other set to test :(

I may look at a cheap caliper to check for runout.

The only thing I haven't checked is the driveshaft or it's bearing. I did also recall when checking earlier that there was a little clunk/click if I rotated the wheel forwards and backwards when jacked.

The wheels still aren't balanced
