Right cap

Featured Replies

2012 Fiesta, this ok to replace. Current coolant cap snapped with inner part stuck.

As long as it's the right pressure spec, yes

Thanks.

The part number is literally printed on the cap. Compare them and if they match the part will be fine.

There are only 2 or 3 different coolant bottle caps that Ford used throughout the last 20 Years.

Thanks. Issue at the moment is the inner part has snapped. Any ideas how to get it out?

This is a well-known issue. This happens mainly on the EcoBoost engines because they are running hotter. Other engine types are less affected but can still suffer from this problem.

The inner part of the cap usually becomes stuck due to dried coolant residue around the o-ring seal. This can easily be prevented by removing the cap regularly and wiping it clean. A bit of petroleum jelly or silicone-based O-ring grease also prevents this from happening.

The inner part of the cap can usually be removed by driving 2 or 3 long screws though the remains of the cap. Once the screws are in you can pull the cap out using vice-grips or side-cutting pliers.

Check the reservoir thoroughly for (micro)cracks. If any are found the reservoir must also be replaced which saves the effort of removing the remains of the cap.

Thanks. It's booked for repair on Monday as it's been leaking for a few days. I've been topping up a lot recently. The nail method didn't work. I've had to drill a hole so I can top up until Monday.

Be aware that you cannot drive the car without the cap or with a damaged cap any further than a short distance.

The cap seals the system completely so that it can build up pressure. The pressure inside the system raises the boiling point of the coolant. Without the cap sealing the system the coolant will expand and can easily overflow.
