Timing issue

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I am struggling timing up my 1994 1.6 zetec escort properly. It had been sat for a very long time and so I replaced the timing belt, water pump and tensioners on it. Now I’m having a hard time with the timing because I believe I’ve timed up the cams and crankshaft but when I do a full rotation they’re out of timing again. Anyone know could this be?

You mean two rotations? The cam will be half way out after one rotation.

How far off is it?

Yeah that might be what I mean actually. Out by a tiny bit really like the timing tool won’t fit back in

I'd take the belt off and start again

If it's only out by a tiny bit then it could be one tooth out on one of the pulleys. Easy to do on some engines. The belt should be pulled tight along the longest section.

If it's out by less than a tooth then really you need to loosen the cam pulley bolts with the shafts locked. That should bring those into line.
