56 Plate 1.3 Ka Weird Noise Over 60Mph

Featured Replies

Morning, new here but could use some help.

My 56 plate 1.3 Ka has started making an odd noise over 60mph. The noise is fairly intermittent, but seems to get more frequent and louder the more past 60 you go. It's hard to explain, but it sounds like fluid being sucked through a pipe, or a bit like the slurp the straw makes when you finish a drinks carton. Mostly sounds like it's coming from behind the dash, centre to passenger side, but sometimes behind the wheel. It's quite hard to pin down as it's pretty noisy in the cab at that speed anyway.

Checked all the fluid levels and everything has stayed the same for the last couple of weeks. I have recently topped up the coolant.

It only happens over 60-65, not when at high revs at a lower speed, or even stationary and revving the engine, so I'm pretty sure it's road speed related.

Can anyone give me any pointers? the car seems to be performing as normal otherwise. Just worried this noise could be something waiting to go wrong!

Thanks

Stoney

What you can here is water/air going through your heater  as you have said yourself "I have recently topped up the coolant" by how much?, you may/must have a leak, may only be a small one but a leak all the same, start by having a good look around paying attention by the belt area (water pump)and radiator, if you carnt find/see a leak you may have a bigger problem ie head gasket, have a look at your exhaust with the engine running and warm to see if theres water coming out

Only topped up the coolant a bit, I'm pretty sure it hasn't used any since, but I'll check and have a good look for leaks.

If it's not using coolant, then its air? can it be bled out?

How come it's only happening over 60ish?

Cheers

yes it there will be air in the system and thats why you can hear it going through the heater metrix 'behind the dash's you describe, you could try bleeding it, I personally would say your water pump is on the way out :huh:, the reason being is your only getting it at around 60ish this will be at about 1700 -2300 rpm thats pump is working past itself (yes still doing it's job) causing the system to aironate.

Gave it a good checkout today, no leaks, no coolant being used.

Bled it, and found a pipe out of it's clip, popped that back in and no noise on the mway this afternoon...fingers crosssed it's sorted.

I hope it's not the water pump, it's only done 20k.

Thanks for the help!

good news that, glad you found that pipe with the clip out off place, yes that could well have been your problem.
