Starting problems 0003

So its a monday morning or a sunday night either or up to you , you go out to the car get in put key to ignition and all you hear is der der der der der der der der der ................... car wont start so try again still nothing so you think hmmmmmmm what should i do

1. ring the aa or rac or whichever you have they like to play with wires and relays to start your car

2.check to makle sure everything is working and everything is fitted on properly (e.g. loose lead)

3.say oh bugger its going to be a longgggg !Removed! day or night up to you

anyways if your like me and love finding starting problems and get joys out of makes old cars start heres some things you could do

*Checks

Battery leads

Ht Leads

Plugs (visual birds eye view water and stuff in plug hole)

Any loose wires

Your no missing any engine parts

Finding the problem

Right a car needs to START "AIR , FUEL , SPARK AND EXHAUST"

So lets start with the Air

*Air box should have a pipe going from it to the engine and a small pipe going into the cylinder head

*air box should be free from holes

air filter should be changed regulary with service (I reccommend a K&N PANEL FILTER)

Air hoses should be where they fit and free from any defects

a slight hole in air hose will lose suction I.E compression helps car not to start and air box havinbg holes in it thats if u are silly enough to put holes in it to make it sound louder the cheap way of a induction kit (does not work in the same way mind)

FUEL

Big on fuel is as after we have air we need some fuel to enter our cylinders and compress

*fuel lines should all be attached any smell of fuel sniff it out

*fuel filter how long ago was this changed is it blocked do you use a additive in your fuel or are or have you been using supermarket fuel recently you would be suprised in the difference

*fuel injectors are they firing well this is where a lot comes into play as most of this runs off tdc sensor but i will get to that in a minute

*TO TEST A FUEL INJECTOR CAN SOMETIME BE HIGHLY DANGEROUS AND CAN BLOW YOUR HAND OFF IF YOUR NOT EXTREMLY CAREFUL PLEASE TEST WITH GREAT CAR AS THEY WORK ON VERY HIGH PRESSURES

*Fuel pump is this sending any fuel easiest way tot check is go to back seat lift them up remove fuel pump fuse turn ignition on pop a multi meter on it across the terminals and see if its getting voltage that then shows you have got a feed going into it so its the unit or the filter which is after it that is the problem

*Make sure you haven't put diesel in instead of petrol yes yes i know it sounds so silly but u would be suprised working at renault how many times that has happend

SPARK

*Plug leads (HT LEADS) Black leads that copme from the coil pack or coil control module

*Spark plug holes had your engine valeted recently well if you have you stand a good chance of having gunk and crap in them holes

*Plugs you will need to take these out to look and check for blackness and fouling is there a oil like smell on them and oily depsoits

*TDC SENSOR (PLEASE NOTE some are mounted on the crank but you can also mount them on the flywheel) The easiest way to check this is to take you spark plug out and fuel pump fuse of course you do not want unburnt fuel going into them cylinder as your cat that had 9 lives has not got none left anyways pop the plug in the ht lead and hold it on the edge of the cylinder block crank it over well ask a friend as the highway code says lol and if it does not spark well our tdc may be nakerd as the ecu (ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT) tells the tdc sensor hello yes spark me now i got air and fuel need some light so tdc says ok cool sends a signal to mr coil pack and mrs spark plug says burn bady burn lol no that doesent happen but thats is waht should happen tdc sends signal to tell the car to spark if this does happen but the car is still not starting i would start checking timing and various other means e.g. if its like a fiat punto the tdc works off crank end reluctor wheel which has teeth on it which tells the spark when to fire and nows where the pistons are and when thats why its called a TDC sensor if you were wondering by now ANYWAS THATS A EASY WAY TO GET ROUND PLUGS sorry it was a long one but you know me by now.

Exhaust

*Holes blowing

*Not fitted correctly e.g. coming away from manifold

*Manifold holes and blowing

exhaust plays a big part as you may have now burnt the fuel but now the gas has to get out and if it has a real short exhaust its 1 not cool enough and 2 will make the car jerky take for example a race car a nice big v6 like jeremy clarkson had on top gear the other night with food blender see the exhausts on that they were f all see how much he revved it and that had fast road cams in which can keep up with the such short exhaust so having a dodgy exhaust blowing your cars not completing the cycle so it struggles to start eays way to rectify quick is to stick your hand well a cloth or piece of cardboard over it and see if its starts then or fumes are coming from elsewhere

Anyways hope this guide helps its on a short and sweet one probs not the best informative but should help some people if you have any further questions on backfires mis fires and all that kind drop me a pm or email or text or phone i be happy to help you

Thanks

Matt
