Advice please do I require a special tool to replace the rear pads on a 2004/5 mondeo ghia x 2.5

Or is the tool a very large allen key?

    Yes you do, tool has large round plate with 2 pins that sit in the slots, the main problem is that you need to turn and apply pressure, just turning does not work.

    Piston rotation is also handed anti-clockwise right, clockwise left for saloon and hatchback, estates are the other way round

    If you happen to have a 4" grinder then the tool for changing the blade fits just right, thats what I use.
