Rev Counter Coil Connection - Kent Engine

Hi, I have just bought a Van Diemen RF87 Formula Ford with Crossflow Kent engine. The rev counter (tachometer) isn't working but if I swap the wire that goes to the coil from where it is now on the positive side and fix it to the negative side it works.

It seems unlikely that the previous owner had it wired up wrongly but these things happen. My question is, should it be on positive or neg side and will i do damage if i swap it?
