I have a 2000 Ghia Automatic, Petrol, and on my way home christmas week all dash lights went out. AA tested at road side and told me the alternator needed replacement. As car is W reg I have a good second hand unit. How do I swap them as the space is very tight and I'm sure there is a correct way.

    I presume you are talking about a focus here...

    First of all disconnect your battery, negative terminal first. That will stop you shorting it out!!

    Next you will need to find the tensioner so you can release the alternator belt. If its an auto tensioner you will need to fit a spanner round it and turn it either clockwise or anti-clockwise to release it. It will probably take a bit of force to do so. With the belt of the next thing would be to disconnect the wires/cables from the alternator then unbolt it.

    I will hunt out my haynes manual later if need be and tell you what it says.
