Ka Remote Tailgate Release

This is my first post.

We have a 2007 Ka which has a remote tailgate release both on the dash and on the key fob neither of which work now. When either button is pressed (pressed twice within 3 seconds for the remote) the tailgate does not release but there is just a click not the whirring of the release motor. I am reluctant to refer to a dealer and wondered if anybody had experienced the same. The tailgate opens fine when the key is inserted however I have noticed that for the first eighth of the clockwise turn there is absolutely no resistance. After that the lock can be felt working.
