rightcar
Hello. I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem. I have a 1995 ford escort. Just lately it does not start very well, a bit hessitant when you first turn the key. I have tested the battery and the alternator (which is new) and both fine. My latest little problem is the battery light illuminates when you turn the ignition off!!! This is a new one on me I have tested the battery and alternator again and both fine. The light goes out when the car is started....1 hour on and the battery is now flat!! Please help :-) All help is appreciated.

There are 3 diodes in the "pack", 1 for overcharge, 1 for undercharge and 1 for tripping the circuit initially. This diode is what works the light inside the car. When blown, this will allow the alternator to act like a generator as siphon charge back from the battery when not in use. Only real thing to do is to change the alternator. You can replace the diode packs, but it is the first thing you put in when rebuilding the alternator, so would cost more than a replacement.
