Pinto Running Problems

Featured Replies

I have a Mk2 Escort with a race prepared 2 litre pinto engine, twin 45's, burtons race cam, facet red top, pressure regualtor, pointless bosch distributor, accuspark module and coil. There is a reason why im listing the iginiton and fuel supply parts!

Have done two trackdays and both occasions the same issue. First outing the car died after a few corners, would not rev anything over 5000, and eventually after a few more corners, it came to a halt and the engine cut out. COuld not start it straight away, but when i had got it back it to the pits it burst into life straight away. PLugs were very black, and we had a cheap fuel pump fittted.

We changed the fuel pump for a facet red top, changed sprak plugs, overhauled the carbs, changed jets, needle valves, adjusted the floats and tried to balance them as best as possible, also fitted a pressure regulator.

Trackday two, same problem after two corners i went to accelerate out of the corner the engine would not rev, seemer to get to 500 rpm and then pretty much cut out straight away, and again would not start untill about ten mins later when i was back in the pits. Attempt two i changed the spark plugs for the a higher heat range, plugged and left the jump battery in and adjusted the fuel pressure to 2.5 psi, the car then went around 2 thirds of the circuit, but it would not rev above 5000 rpm in any gear, and eventually the engine died and it came to a halt.

It seems the problem only occurs under load, when revving it up in the garage its fine, never cuts out and revs all the way up to 7500. The plugs are a good colour two, so the mixture does not seem too rich, as when we came in from the track we took the plugs out and they seem fine. We are at a loose end really, is it still fuel supply problems? Timing issues? Hopefully someone can shed some light.

Cheers

What air filtration are you using?
