Illuminated Gear Knob

Featured Replies

Ive recently got an illuminated gear knob and just looking on advice on how to wire it up. Im reasonably capable with electrical wiring for housing etc but never realy done any wiring on a car except for my rear lights. Thanks

If it's a Ford OEM , then just check to see there is no connector already in place around the gear stick area , i remember on my Mk2.5 there were2/3 connections in that area.

Otherwise , Or/Bk wire on the demister

Bearing in mind the gear knob is off a fiesta mk 7 and im fitting it to a mk6 fiesta :) lol as far as I can see there isn't a connector for it

Not wanting to sound stupid but how do I do that? Theres 2 wires on the gear knob. Like I said im not very in the know when it comes to car wiring :)

If it was a MK2 Focus it would be a doddle as the illumination loom for the dash lighter socket with the cubbyhole is conveniently positioned.

Would you happen to have a glowing ring?

Lighter socket glowing ring you mean? Nope but theres another idea! Lol

Hahahaaha no comment i bet for that respose.

Back to the question , you need to get a 12v tester , then you will be able to find an IGN live from either the radio or anything close by , and earth to any earth point or bolt.

Could I wire the gear knob into my lighter socket? Bearing in mind that its a permanent live to the lighter

No, that's a 20A feed, don't wanna burn your car out.

If you want a wire thst comes on with the lights connect a live to the wire on your headlight control.

As you look at the headlight switch from the front the wire you need is bottom left (pin 16),.

I believe your headlight switch is the same as on the Focus so my guide for swapping over switches will help to some degree.

Pin 16 is the connection to the numberplate lights so will come on with sidelights.

Just scotchlock it together, it's only a very low ampersge so 5A wire will suffice.

Just run the earth to any body mounted metal screw.

There's an Orange and a black wire from the gear knob does it matter which ones used as the earth and which ones used as the ignition live? Will need to get some wire

You would trnd to find thst the orange one is the live.

As i'd assume it's led's in the knob i'd say it's polarity sensitive so will only work one way round anyhow.
