Car On With Key Out Of The Ignition

Featured Replies

The car stays on even if I take the key out of the ignition, but only if I have my foot on the brake pedal.

Also if I turn my headlights/front lights on the brake lights stay on constantly. If I turn the headlights off then the brake lights turn off unless I put my foot on the brake pedal.

Seems that its the brake pedal controlling a lot more than just the brakes.

Any Ideas on What I can do?

Thank you in advance.

I would have initially said faulty brake light switch (cheap and easy to replace) but that does sound a bit of a strange fault you have there. Can anyone else shed any light?

Welcome to the club by the way

Sounds really odd to me. When you say the car stays on when you take the key out of the ignition, do you mean the engine is still running or just the dash lights are still on?

The fact that your car is running with the key out of the ignition would suggest either a faulty ignition switch, or a faulty wiring loom. Ignition switch is the cheaper answer in all respects! What year is the fiesta? if you take the key far enough away from the car with the engine running, the immobiliser should kick in and shut the car down.

With regards the brakes though, and the symptoms above, I am thinking you have an electrical problem, either a faulty GEM board, or perhaps a faulty wiring harness. Unless your more than confident doing the work yourself (replacing at least an ignition switch) then your best bet is to get a diagnosis on it by a garage or an auto electrician.

Yeah the engine is running. Like as if the key would be inside the ignition

Replace the brake light bulbs, the dual filament bulbs can cause odd problems if they have a bad earth or the filaments in the lamps touch. You could just remove the 2 stop lamp bulbs to verify before buying new ones.

As previously stated it is a really odd problem but hopefully a simple solution.

Thank you. I will try that.

My car is Ford Focus 2006 1.6, Would there be another reason?

Do you think the brake lights and Car staying on without the key while holding brake pedal is a sepprate problem?

I had a very similar problem with a MK3 Cortina GT I had years ago. It turned out to be a worn wire in the ignition, caused by the cowling having been removed and replaced incorrectly, thus pinching the wiring from the ignition, which led to bare wires touching each other and shorting out........ As for the brake light problem, that sounds very much like a switch problem to me, but then, I am no electrical engineer lol.

I think it is a wiring issue, its just tracking down which one, whether its a faulty switch or a short out somewhere.

You dont hear any spark noises or anything similar when starting the car do you?

Not to sure about the ignition part where the car stays running... But the brake light part... Have you changed any bulbs lately? S I have had someone before put the wrong connecting bulb in.. The single connection instead of the 2 connection type which made the brake pedal light actual operate the headlights for some reason? Just food for thought.

A wet fuse box can cause this too.
