P042F

Featured Replies

Hi all, this my first post so hello to everyone,

So i fitted a blanking EGR plate to my 09 Focus 1.6tdci 109bhp with 65,000 miles and the engine light came on showing (P042F Blocked or stuck EGR Valve) and the car lost power so i removed the plate and bought a D900 OBD reader to reset the codes.

The engine light came on again after 3 or 4 miles so i removed the egr valve, and cleaned with Wynns egr cleaner then refitted and remove the engine code again. Anyhow the same P042f code keeps returning after after 4 or 5 miles.

Any ideas or help would be grateful?

Paul

Hi Paul.

Your issue is exactly why I chose not to install the blanking plate I bought on my focus.

I just wasn't sure how the ECU would react to fitting it and was worried about power loss/limp mode.

I have a 1.6 tdci 59 plate (euro 5) and yours will be a euro 4 with it being an 09 plate.

The earlier models take the blanking plate well but the newer models (yours and mine) can and do throw up these error codes which can be problematic.

My intention in the new year is to do a DPF delete with remap plus an EGR delete too via the ECU so both the shell of the DPF is still visible for MOT purposes and also the EGR will physically be there but will be disabled in the ECU.

I think this is a much more effective way of doing things as the price justifies the performance/torque/economy gains.

Prices are coming down all the time for the above DPF/EGR delete and I personally can't wait to have it done!

Is this something you have considered having done??

Mike.

Oh and looking at your mileage, you are 10k miles away from needing a major service which includes a new DPF at a cost of around £1200!

DPF removal will cost you around £400.

Just for your information.

Will cleaning out the dpf with the like of Wynn's Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner not help or are these products a waste of time? And would it help clear the code?

I was thinking of changing my car next year so not worried about major service, but my problem, if I was to keep the car would be while I live in Ireland, there's not too many people able to physically delete DPF/EGR and through the ECU!

I had tried to get the car remapped a couple of months back but the company couldn't do the car as they said it had a newer type 3 ECU.

I bought the blanking plate for lower torque and also CR tuning box to help low end power as i sometime pull a caravan and now i've had to remove the plate and haven't fitted the box as the connectors hard to find at the back of the engine.

Thanks for your quick reply and advice.

Paul

There are lots of people on here who are much more knowledgable than me and I hope one of them chimes in on this to help you!

I bought the blanking plate for the same reasons as you (minus pulling a caravan) but ended up not doing it for exactly the same reason you ended up with.

Like I said, I hope some people on here will take an interest in your problem and help you out!!

Hi Paul,

Whynns EGR cleaner would need to be used, its good to an extent but all it does is loosen the carbon which then gets drawn into the engine, it really doesnt help a lot. Ideally the blanking plate would fix the issue, but not in your case.

I would suggest the best bet for you is to have the EGR removed and cleaned the old fashioned way.

Hi phil,

thanks for reply.

I did remove the EGR valve and clean it by hand and with a toothbrush by spraying in the egr cleaner to the two openings. To be honest, on turning the valve by hand it wasn't stuck or full of crap or jammed up so i'm at a loss as to why the code keeps showing up? Just after putting in 325ml of DPF cleaner into tank to help clear any soot build up so maybe this may help bring up mpg. At the moment i'm getting average of 45mpg since buying the car last year. The best average i got was 47.5 but that will always drop when i tow my caravan. Is my average mpg good or bad?

I bought my car as an import from England as an ex fleet car with motorway miles so would assume the car would do with being driven hard to help clear the filters.

Anyone with advice?

Paul

Sounds in that case like its the EGR sensor thats duff.

If it is really that easy to actuate by hand, then I would get the sensor replaced.

Hi,

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I am having this problem. Dismantled EGR and it is not stuck, blanked it off and cleared codes but still have loss of power.

Did you ever solve this?

Thanks

I just started having this problem too with the egr valve and the same code p042f.  Lack of power and management light on. Keep resetting it but keeps coming back on. I have tried taking the egr valve off but couldn't take off the clip that holds it on so gave up

Any ideas peeps

Hi John, I'm owning a Mazda3 1.6 d from 2009 and am having exactly the same problem, just a note here the engines are the same in both focus and mine car, so the solution should be the same I suppose. Have you found remedy for this problem?

The only sensor specifically for the EGR is the valve position sensor that is built into the valve. A "stuck closed" error could be a fault in this sensor, or the EGR valve connector or wiring.

With a new EGR, the 1.6TDCI does have to learn the new settings. There is a procedure in Forscan for this. In some cases the car may eventually learn, but only if the difference is quite small. Otherwise it may mean a visit to your local franchised dealer with IDS!
