Escort Van Engine Problem (1.8 Endura) Blown?

i have owned my escort van for a few months now and it has been fine. I started it this morning, it ran on idle for around 20 seconds then cut out.

So i tried starting it again, i can hear the starter, engine turns over but with a loud tapping sound & does not fire. I checked the oil, just below minimum & all other fluids seem to be ok, no leaks ect.

I am not sure if the engine is knackered? it is a flat 1.8 endura, with 85k.

Hope somebody can help? thanks.

    I just had a proper look at the engine & it turns out the cam belt has snapped... only 5k miles till it needed to be changed :(
