It re configures your ECU's fuel to air ratios etc to gain more BHP and Torque from your car.

As you have a naturally aspirated ST170 you won't get massive gains but IIRC you would still get something respectable like 8-12bhp and a little torque

Certain maps have their benefits yes they can help your MPG as factory ECU's are moderated not optimised.

As I said im new to modifying is there other remaps available then? Ive really only heard of the bluefin. Thanks

The Superchips Bluefin offers an extra 8Hp over stock -

This equates to about 5% which you probably won't even notice,(this is open to debate, but many experts recon you need at least a 10% gain to even notice a difference) with it costing £249, i personally would not bother, especially as you may also have to pay extra for insurance (with such an insignificant gain ) - other remaps from other suppliers are usually similar to Bluefin in terms of Hp gain

Thanks for your reply. I think I will leave it for now. Would you recommend any other ways to get a bit more power.

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Ford OC mobile app

It is difficult to get a lot (or a significant amount) more power from it, it is based on a 130PS engine, Ford had to do a lot of work to get 170PS out of it - it is an "im-between" car that is fast compared to compact/ "budget" cars, but slow compared to modern hot-hatches - if your mate has got an STI or an EVO there is no way you can really keep up with him in the ST170, stock or tuned, you could spend a lot of money and, unforttunately, you won't get a big return in terms of power

stuff about ST170 -

http://www.fordst170.co.uk/specs.php

You could do the remap (+8hp/5%) fit a new K&N panel filter approx +2Hp/1% (best not to change the airbox for a cone filter, you will loose power due to heatsoak and the ST170 has a very carefully designed induction system, that would be ruined if you fitted a cone filter) ehhaust - this includes the manifold,(a 4-branch ss, you could heatwrap it ) cat,(a freer-flowing "sports" one could be fitted) and the rest of the system replaced with a stainless- steel one, and the silencers for "straight through" types

That would probably brring it up to about 185Hp, to get more than that may require things like total engine rebuilds,(balanced, lightened blueprinted) special parts etc,etc - expensive

You can lighten the car (ditch the spare tyre (full size 16" spare is 17.4kgs), subwoofer,(could be 20-25kgs) and all the junk fillimg up the boot/ etc ) - fit lighter wheels (same size as stocklarger wheels are heavier ) team dynamics pros are a bit lighter - the lighter wheels will reduce the overall wieight, reduce rotating mass, and unsprung weight, you coukld fil lighter, kevlar belted tyres instead of steel ones - goodyear eagle f1s, off the top of my head, special lighter parts, like a racing battery, (the sports exhaust will probably be lighter already) then the rotating parts, like the flywheel (you could upgrade the clutch to a carbon/ kevlar with HD parts, stronger clamping force, etc, while you are at it) you could ditch the AC (11kgs, the pulley always turns, even with the AC off, its like lightening the flywheel) - an elecric waterpump (reduces load on the engine, better , more accurate control of temps)

After that you are probably looking to strip the interior, fitting lightweight (eg - carbon fiber) racing seats etc etc - if you can get the weight right down it makes a massive difference to acceleration, braking, roadholding etc

You would really have to be a big fan of the ST170, because you could just go out and buy an ST225, buy a Bluefin, take 5 mins installing it, and you have 270+Hp and 435Nm! -

http://www.mybluefin.co.uk/curves/FocusSTStage1.pdf

or and RS mk1 or 2, or even an EVO, STI etc (sh.. just between us)
