Just checked the timing on my fiesta with a xenon timing light and it is slightly out. According to the haynes manual it can't be adjusted, and it must be a "fault within the system itself". Is this correct and is it possible to adjust the timing?

I think only if it has a distributor and not a coil pack as you twist it to advance/!Removed! the timing.

That's sort of what I thought, adjusted the timing on the XR3i by twisting the distributor, but the fiesta doesn't have one. So I guess it's a no go. The fiesta isn't out by much and it doesn't cause any running problems but I just like things to be right.

Why do they have to make things so normal people can't fix them.

from memory, you can only accurately check the timing once you put engine into service mode on the older fords...but not sure if this is the case with that engine.

either way, wouldnt be too concerned if its only a slight difference from the 10' btdc @ 900rpm

have to bear in mind that the ecu adjusts the timing for optimum performance throughout the time engine is running, a few degrees either way is more than acceptable, but if your looking at more than say 6/7deg out on a fully warmed up engine, then you may possibly have an issue elsewhere thats forcing the timing to be adjusted in compensation.

if that was the case, then i would start with a full engine service, if not done recently, including the valve clearances...and go from there

Had a service 2000 miles ago and it runs fine since the new exhaust.

When the engine is warm it is less than 6 degrees out, very small amount, so I guess it's alright. Just me worrying about nothing...again :)
