Engine Modifications

Featured Replies

I have got a ford focus mk2.5 1.6 petrol.

Just wondering if there is any mods I can do to get a bit more out of the engine.

I've heard a remap is alot of money for very little gain.

Or is my engine not very tuneable?

Cheers

Karl

Unfortunately there is very little available for your engine (probably for very good reason(s)) + by the time you spend real money modifiying it, you may as well have bought a quicker car, as that would probably be cheaper to buy and to insure, be more reliable, more disirable and hold its value better/ you would lose less money on it

Any engine can be modified, but is it worthwhile/ cost effective and is a 1.6NA a good place to start

The enging could be stripped down and rebuilt, the crank could be lightened, strengthened/ toughend, same for the rods pistons, (+ balanced) high- lift cams could be added, the cast iron exhaust manifold could be binned and a 4-branch exhaust manifold fitted this could be heatwrapped or coated, a "sports" cat could be fitted, along with a "straight through" silencer, the pipe could go up in diameter (this may have to be custom made, from stainless steel, naturally, but you can get carbon- fiber silencers now)

the throttle body could be knife-edged, o you could fit a larger-diameter one, or if you are feeling flush, ITBs (individual throttle bodies) you may need to get a stand-alone ECU for this (probably the best way to go)

you would need to upgrrade the transmission too, a carbon-fiber and kevlar clutch is good (i use one) along with a lightened fluwheel (you may need to get the gears in the gearbox strengthened) + an ATB (automatic torque biasing) diff

No point in doing all this work/ spending that kind of money and hauling the road junk around - so time for the cat to go on a serious diet - the lightest wheels/ tyres available, plexglass/ carbon parts etc racing seats, ditch the AC, you could fit an electric waterpump, carbon bonnet etc ive lost 150+kgs but you could go further - minus 200kgs or more is possible

if you are doing a bit of drag racing, NOS can be quite useful

a realistic budget could be 5k - but it is known for people to spend 100+k on projects like this

an ST225 can make 270+ hp,(+435Nm!) the bluefin costs under £400

Alternatively just run you car how it is and save up for an ST, or a 2L Focus, etc

Wow.

I couldn't warrant spending that on my focus. It's only worth about 5k. Lol.

Think your last comment was spot on and think I might have to save up for an st.

Just do cosmetic mods for the time being then get an st in the future.

Thanks for your comment although some of it baffled me. Lol.
