Mk4 Escort Van Wont Start Cold

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Hoping for a bit of help on this one!

I have fitted an engine out of a mk5 escort (1.,8 endura non turbo) in to my mk4 escort van as the engine sadly fell apart! I have fitted the newer engine using the original mk4 mechanical pump as the mk5 one had some extra wiring on it.

It takes a long long time to get started, sometimes over 15 minutes of messing about opening the bleed valve etc and pump more diesel through. One running she runs absolutely spot on and doesnt miss a beat. and will start again if turned off too.

however if left overnight the same thing happens again and there seems to be no diesel at the injectors without a lot of cranking again. I have fitted a one way valve in the fuel line, and I have also fitted a new filter housing with the push primer along with a new filter.

Could anybody tell me if I am perhaps not bleeding the system correctly or if there is something else I could try?

Many thanks!

I wonder if your issue is due to the use of the existing fuel pump, if its faulty or leaky, you could be taking air in which is then stopping the engine turning over.

As above

Sounds like it may be the pump then thanks guys. Do you know if it is possible to get them rebuilt and resealed?

Many thanks

its possible, but for the price of a replacement it could be a false economy.
