Limp home mode is usually only activated in turbo powered diesel and petrol cars with over boost problems to prevent damage to the engine. A lambda sensor normally just triggers a emission fault as the ecu can no longer check the exhaust gasses but not cause any drivability issues. A voltage spike could be a likely cause
