I have a 1993 mk5 escort and was running up today when the engine just cut out and all the electrics have died. Could it be the fuse box as we have had trouble with it before and it is a common problem with these.

    Very possibly. The mk5 and 6 are notorious for water ingress into the fuse box

    A replacement fuse box can be fitted, although they might be hard to find, or the original may be able to be reflowed.
