Escort 1996 Rear Drum Removal

Featured Replies

Hi. I have removed the 4 bolts securing the drum and bearing and the drum has partially moved off the linings but there is an angled cable connection into the back of the drum that is preventing complete removal. What is it and how do I remove it as it is not mentioned in the Haynes Manual.

The cable is the handbrake cable.

If the handbrake is release then you should be able to slide the drum/hub over the shoes without touching the cable. The shoes are probably catching on the lip created by wear on the inside of the drum.

Hi, Thanks for the advice but it is not the handbrake cable as that is fixed to the backplate. This cable is sheathed and appears to have a white plug which goes into an angled black socket which goes through the large whole in the backplate onto the hub/drum assembly. There is an 8mm nut/ bolt which appears to secure it but I have not managed to undo that. I wondered if it is something to do with ABS and if the white round section pulls out of the angled black piece but I can't budge it and am a bit loath to put too much pressure on it for fear of breaking it.

Ahh I'm with you, yes it will be an abs sensor.

They are a pain to remove aswell.. Am I right in saying you can't get the hub away because you can't get the clearance due to the angled bit of the abs sensor?

bolt it back together and remove the 30mm nut under the silver domed cap, yes I know as per TSB'S removal of the drum is supposed to be done with the hub but as Stef has said the ABS sensor can be a right pain :D :driving:

Hi guys,

Thanks for your advice.

In the end I spotted the 10mm bolt which appeared to be securing the cable and after a bit of effort removed it with a socket and the ABS sensor came off painlessly. The drum and hub then came off without any problem.
