Ka Front Nearside Suspension Knocks- A Mystery

Featured Replies

I can see that front suspension knocks are very common with Ka and other Fords, and I have had this with Front OS and NS assemblies, and here is what has been done in recent times; the nearside in particular between Oct 2013 (lower wishbone mount, shocker, coil spring), April 2014 ( top mount) and yesterday (droplink)

FNS- coil spring, shock absorber, drop link, lower wishbone
mount, top suspension mount

FOS- coil spring, shock absorber, drop link, lower wishbone
mount, top suspension mount

RNS- coil spring, shock absorber.

ROS- coil spring, shock absorber.

All work done by well established garages, yet I still get a 'clank' over traffic calming bumps (and potholes) on compression (going up the bump) and tension (coming down from it) - Yesterday's droplink work was the only piece of the whol assembly on both sides which hadn't been replaced so I had that done in desperation- No good the same problem exists.

I should say that both wheel bearings have been checked and there is no movement.

I am out of ideas and I ask if any other member has had identical experiences?

I have the exact same problem, although I seem to only get the knock when I go over a bump and turn right at the samesame time.....

I've changed so much yet it remains a mystery, its like no one knows, but surely someone has solved it???

Have the bushes been changed? These are rubber and perish.

To what bushes do you refer? - as far as I am aware I have replaced all of the Ka components for steering and suspension (please see list)- maybe other Fords have different assemblies

Our Steetka failed MOT on Anti-Roll bar bushes, the rattle that we had previously then disappeared.

Thanks, but those bushes are the Droplinks which I have already replaced on both sides

My daughter has had to live with this annoying loud clank from the front n/s suspension since my last post in September 2014 and by now it had become most embarrassing, as well as alarming.

Well, the problem has today been fixed and i want to share the solution with all of you fellow sufferers!

You will recall that we have replaced all the suspension components in recent times and the front nearside in particular where the problem continued had a new front strut sometime before my last post, so there was no real reason to suspect it wasn't right.

It turns out that some struts (probably not OEM) are incorrectly engineered and the spacer/collar which sits on top of the strut and immediately under the car's bodywork turret which holds the rubber mount and securing nut is simply too long- it has to be cut down in length so that the strut has little mobement.

Ours has been done and it is now noise free - thank heavens!!!!

So folks, get your Ka's back to your garage and get them to see this:-

I’ve got this got awful noise too on my 2014 Ka 1.2 zetec, just heading out to the driveway to take a look,

instead of cutting, maybe packing the gap with additional rubber? Just a thought?
