Spark Plug Removal Problems?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Can anyone help.

My garage tells me that I would be well advised to leave the old spark plugs alone on a recent service.

Reason given, these engines have a habit of welding the plugs to the block. Removal for service replacement can result in damage! "Better wait until spark plugs are really worn out !!" unquote.

Although 14 years old, this KA has only done 20K miles.

Can anyone advise if this is true, and if so what does enable removal?

Copious amounts of WD 24 hours before the attempt ?

All reply's gratefully received.

Hi,

If the plugs have been in for a while they may well have seized in. A good soaking with a penetrating fluid rather than wd40 would be advisable.

If a garage or well equipped diy person is doing it then someone with a 'sykes Pickavant vibro impact tool' may get them out without damage. It's not a cheap bit of kit but someone doing this work all the time will know what it is.

You'd be better off using Plusgas.

It penetrates better than WD40.

should change spark plugs every 30k or 3 yrs from memory.

i woulkd soak them on a good penetrating oilthen use a good quality

socket as already mentioned (sykes pikavant).

if your not confident to do it then take to a small local garage & i am sure they will help you.

maybe a good idea to get the engine hot then try loostening the plugs ??

keep us posted m8

:) Hi,

Thank you for your replies, most helpful.

I fancy a new, new Focus. If I sell my KA before 30 K I won't have to worry about it.

Cheers all.
