2.0 Tdci Mk2 Fault Finding Help

Featured Replies

I've recently bought a Focus Mk 2 (2006) 2.0 TDCI,(Ghia) its sluggish to start, sometimes turning the engine over for 20 sec or so. I changed the fuel filter, got all the air out seemed to improve for a couple of days, although it was warmer. I entered the hidden test mode on the 2 line black/ green display hold the set/reset button in and turn on ignition

.

I noticed that the engine temp after the car had been running was 115 C, the temp gauge usually reads just over the 1st 1/4. When the outside air temp was about 10 degrees c the engine temp was showing 45 c

Can someone that doesn't have a problem starting their car let me know what readings you have.

Regards

Dave

Dave do you get this problem when the engine is warm?

I have the same kind of issue but it only happens when the engine is warm, I have a 2008 Ford Focus TDCI

The engine temps are fine. the 115c engine temp you are getting in the test mode is the actual tempeature inside the head. the gauge on the instrument cluster is the tempreature of the coolant, which will be less. 115c is a normal tempreature for an engine upto optimial conditions (mine is around 110-120 when warmed up)

as for the car not starting properly. the first thing to check is the battery, especially now as the tempreatures are dropping, a bad battery would cause the car to crank much slower. if the issue is only happening on the first cold start in the morning, i would suspect the glow plugs.

In my case I have checked the battery before start and when the engine is running the voltage seems to be fine. My engine only has issues when it is warm it will take ages cranking over before eventually starting, when cold it will start first time. I am a bit lost for a solution. People have said the shudder valve, crankshaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor etc

Hi. Just wanted to check what temp you get first thing in the morning, when the car hasn't been used for say 10 hours, if the weather is coolish out as it is at the moment, less than 10 degrees, i would suspect 45 c head temp to be a bit high?. Could this be causing the glowplugs not to be used?

Thanks for your assistance

What does your battery voltage drop to? Mine drops to about 10v just as the engine fires.

I am not sure at the moment because it's in the garage having the crank sensor replaced and the injectors tested, when I tested the battery before the engine was running I think I got around 12.5v and with the engine running i had around 14v I think. I can test it again this weekend to get some more accurate results
