Poor Mpg Mk2 1.6 Tdci Titanium 09

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I brought the above car last week.

The MPG is poor, I filled up last Friday and I have done 150 miles and I have used nearly half a tank, half the miles have been done on the motorway and half around town as a steady, careful pace. The average MPG according the to computer is 45, but I dont think im getting this at all. I will probably fill the car up again tomorrow and check to see how many litres it takes to fill up.

The MPG on my old car was much better, it was a 1.7 diesel Astra 05 plate.

Anyone know if there may be a problem with the car,?I drive very carefully and very rarely put my foot down.

Also, the engine fan comes on every time after I turn the engine off, even after its been on for a few miles in cold weather like today, is that normal?

The A/C always come on by default when ever I turn the heater on in the car too. Should it do that?

Thanks in advance

The AC comes on if you direct airflow to windscreen only, that's normal.

Is the AC still on when you switch the engine off? If so, its that causing fans, and will use more fuel! But I'll assume you're manually switching it off each time. First check you have enough coolant. The fans are possibly indicating a DPF regeneration if you've plenty of coolant, if its happening all the time theres a definite problem (could be various parts though).

Mine was regen'ing near constantly as was averaging about 55mpg, after fault finding and eventually changing the DPF it has gone up to 63mpg, even in the cold weather! Of course if you're doing a lot of short journeys, expect lower.
