Ford Focus 1.8 Tdci Rear Disc Brake Mot Failure

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I recently had a mot and my focus failed on the nearside rear parking brake, i have checked the foot pedal braking and handbrake lever on the caliper and it all working fine but when the handbrake is applied there is no resistance, I have tried adjusting the handbrake itself and it made no difference, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

By no resistance do you mean in the handbrake lever or to turn the wheel with handbrake on?

If the cable is all ok then it looks like you may need a new caliper

Thanks foir the quick reply Stef.

there is no resistance when the handbrake is on but the caliper is solid when the foot pedal is used.

Sounds like something is up with the handbrake mechanism inside the caliper.

Can you see the cable/arm moving on the caliper when someone puts the handbrake on for you? or just make a note of where the arm is and then check again with handbrake operated.

That'll rule out (or confirm) any handbrake cable issues.

Sounds like a snapped cable or a caliper issue. The cable will be 2 or 3 separate pieces, you could just change the broken section but I prefer to change all of it as its possible the new piece will show up the next weakest point in the cable and could possibly snap at a different point, plus the older cable pieces will be stretched.
