Power Loss When Engines Cold

Featured Replies

Wondering if any of you could help with a issue with my car.

It's a 2009 fiesta zetecs s petrol. After driving on 3 hour motorway journey i pulled up and noticed a radiator hose had split an was squirting coolant everywhere.

I fixed the hose and refilled with coolant and water but now when driving the car it loses power randomly (revs die of and throttle doesn't do anything or bogs down). But this only happens when the engine is cold and once warm it works perfectly.

I've had the car scanned and the mechanic mentioned a error on the air temperature so i replaced the MAF sensor but the issues still there.

So I'm wondering if its possible the thermostat may be at fault? Also got error code 0125 in the test menu.

Any ideas?

If you're getting the 0215 code from the cluster test menu then this will only be a cluster related code, it doesn't store ECM related codes there.

If the car lost all it's coolant before you noticed it may have done some more serious damage - did you notice the temp gauge going into the red when you were driving the car?

Then again google says P0125 is a Fuel Pump related DTC, fuel pump relay, poor connection to fuel pump, faulty ECM etc so that area is worth further investigation especially with the symptoms you describe which could be fuel starvation related.

Cheers for the reply, oh right well the mechanic used a diagnostic tool and code an error code for air temperature. Also the test code is 0125 not 0215.

No not all the coolant was lost as when i pulled over there was still the minimum amount left in there and i topped up with water prior to fixing the pipe so the engine never overheated while it was cooling down from the journey.

Doh!

P0125 makes sense with you having a coolant leak as it's an 'insufficient coolant temperature' code which was probably triggered when the coolant sensor was measuring air temperature when there should have been coolant.

Only other thing I could suggest looking at is anything in the engine bay which may have gotten soaked with coolant when the pipe let go - electrical connectors and so on.

Ah right i didn't think of that, I'll check all connectors around where the hose split.

That code was cleared but is showing again so would that point to the thermostat being at fault?

I'll try to get it to the garage this weekend but I'd like to have some idea of what the issue is

Don't think a faulty thermostat would give that sort of code but I may be wrong. Would expect a faulty thermostat to cause the car to either not warm up as quickly (if it's staying open) or overheating (thermostat staying closed).

When you topped up the coolant did you run the engine with coolant take cap off to help bleed out any air in the system?

Right ok, yea as far i i remember however i know i forgot to put the hot air on ect while doing it

I'm tempted to flush it all out and do it again.

Also i checked the area by where the spilt was an there doesn't seem to be anything that could have been affected by the leaking coolant

Have you got tge 1.0 litre eco boost with the zetec s kit on it? And which hose split? The one coming off the expansion tank?.

No need to try and scare you but ive saw 4 have a coolant leak on the eco boost. Lost all power an found out the it cracked a liner in the engine.

Wouldnt really explain no issues when warm though

No mines the 1.6 one, it was the hose at the top of the engine that's mainly plastic with a rubber section.

Oh god that's not good can't imagine that'll be the issue with mine (i hope so anyway)

Now replaced the MAF sensor, air filter and coolant temperature sensor but still got the same issue.

Took car to local mechanic and no errors when he scanned it and typically the issue didn't show while at the mechanics cause the engine was hot.

Any ideas?
