Light Bulb - What's Cool These Days?

Featured Replies

On my CC (it is MK2, equivalent of MK2.5 hatch) the passenger's side dipped light bulb decided to die today.

What is the best light bulb for this?

I know it got to be H7 55W (thanks to excellent bulb sticky thread!) but what is the best bulb on the market?

I am thinking of OSRAM Nightbreaker Ultimate - they are 15 quid on Amazon for a pair.

Are they any good?

Matter of opinion i found them poor to be honest ive tried osram nightbreaker nightbreaker plus autobulbs cobalt and ive gone back to my ebay xenon effect bulbs cheaper brighter and last longer some may disagree but i wouldnt have got rid of those above if they were as good bosch pure light have a better light output and are best buy bulbs scoring higher than osram ,osram score 94 bosch 147 £22 a pair though

Can you please post link to the review for Bosch and Osram? Wil be interesting to compare it.

BTW, Auto express seem to like Osrams and Philps

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/76760/car-bulbs-2014-halogen-headlight-bulb-reviews

Also, the manual says that to change the lightbulb I'll just need to undo one screw and take the light out.

Is it really this easy?

Yes, it really is that easy!... Osrams every time, well worth it. If you make enough use of the H1's do them too! :)

the ebay ones artscot uses are also good.

Dont get the nightbreakers, they dont last very long. mine blew after 2 months, bought another pair and it blew again afer just 1

im now using osram cool blue intense and they have lasted a year and ive only replaced 1 bulb so far

Got Bosch ones, fitted half an hour go - perfect!

An interesting thing is that the dead bulb didn't have any visible filament damage - it looked "normal".

A quick continuity check proved that is was indeed dead, though.

You've got yourself sorted, but to add my £0.02 I think it's a bit hit and miss...

..I've read about people raving that their osrams have last 200 years other people saying they didn't last 200 seconds... and more or less this is the trend with every single bulb maker out there.. some people love them, some hate them, some last, some don't...

Whether there is something in the transportation, packing, supplier, etc etc, idk.. just seems to be a bit of a case of 'here you go, and goodluck'...

In terms of 'whats cool' again.. personal preference.. I see local people driving round in; what appear to be, vauxhalls with lights bluer than the foc banner, others with yellow, expensive cars that clearly have HID's and the typical "i don't give a hoot* what I have" (*Got the owl reference in there - 10 points!).

I hope your bulbs hold out, guide you home and are to your taste :D if you can recommend them then please do so.. I'm very much in the 'idk what to get' category, so might be the next ones I try :D

Well... tomorrow is going to be a big test for the bulb - I am planning to put some extra hours at work (not that I want to; I have to) so I'll definitely need some light.

As to personal preference, I agree. It is very subjective. For example, my neighbour loves his Astra.... and Corsa. And when I bought Focus CC he just stopped talking to me.

Also, I absolutely despised Nissan Qashqai 1,5 when I test drove it and you seem to like it very much :)

Back to the bulbs and all that - it is still too early for me to comment on the bulb other than "it works, what a surprise" :)
Let me expertly assess it for a prolonged period of time and then I will share my experience with this piece of technology. If I won't forget about it, of course!

Oh, and that owl reference was great! :)

Tbh, I don't know what the Nissan is, other than Qashqai, it's a late 2014 model (5 miles on the clock ) and seems to be fairly nippy for the size of the thing...

I think I love the technology, lets not forget that my Focus is late 2007, so it's 7 years old than the nissan..

Yours is a 2010, I bet the tech in that is a bit 'more' than in mine..

I like the Nissan, but the horn lets it down... I want to test drive the Kuga

I do know that this is Qashqai 1.5, I checked it by numberplate :)

This is the Nissan my missus always wanted one but in automatic guise so we took it for a spin.

That car had probably the mostgodawful gearbox I ever came across.

I needed to make a turn to a busy street, so I waited for a gap in traffic then pressed accelerator. And then... nothing.

I though I could clearly hear what's goin on in the electronic brain of the damn thing - "that guy want's me to go fast.... really?... doesn't he we never hurry in France?.... oh well... I guess I need to do something then.... c'est la vie... " and then, after several seconds of hesitation, the gearbox went into kickdown mode and the car jumped right in front of oncoming traffic. Not great, I tellya!

As to technology, I think after I've spent some time with Tesla Model S nothing can surprise me anymore :)

...isn't Nissan Japanese?

Really it's a 1.5??? That's mental.. it's pretty quick and certainly shifts... as for the gear box, I have to admit, it's a little clunky, but then maybe I'm used to the ford.. It's a manual though. I'm not a fan of most automatics I've driven...

I drove a nasty little Yaris automatic, it's saving grace was that you could knock it out into a sort of 'tip tronic' type of thing (iirc) knock forward for lower gear, pull back for higher gear... that helped (not sure if there was the full range).

A landrover auto that I've been driving recently just irritates me, I seem to be driving a long at it's cruising at around 2500 revs... I'm their trying to get the damn thing to chill out..Feel like yelling "change up you mad man, I'm not going anywhere that needs high revs!!!"...

Philips Xtreme Vision seem to be another popular and very good quality bulb.

As far as H7 halogen bulbs go, the Xtreme Visions and the Osram Nightbreakers Unlimited are usually by far the best in terms of brightness and beam pattern. In terms of life expectancy they aren't great. A bulb that burns brighter usually doesn't last as long so it really depends on whether your priority is brightness or how long the bulb will last

..isn't Nissan Japanese?

Sort of :) They are part of Renault-Nissan alliance so they share lots of stuff. The 1.5dCi engine is Renault-sourced.

But that's not it - Nissan Pixo is Indian Suzuki Maruti. The Nissan Terrano is Dacia Duster (Romanian car). The Micra is made by Renault India (Chennai plant). The Almera on some markets but not all is/was made by Samsung (SM3). The recently relaunched Nissan Datsun brand is selling rebadged Russian Lada Granta...

I like automatics, especially in town. However, I prefer the dual-mode 'boxes. For example, when I drove Ford Fusion (the US one, it is called Mondeo here) in Death Valley, the gearbox was so out of touch it could be made by a politician! So I just switched it to manual mode and used flappy paddles to control the car - brilliant!

I drove a nasty little Yaris automatic,

I know full well what you're talking about. These robotized-manuals are full of it and Yaris MMT is a one "fine" example :)

To be entirely honest I'd prefer the middle ground one - the one that gives acceptable (but better than standard fit) beam and lasts for at least a year.

We'll see how good the Bosch will work but as Halfords give 1 year warranty on bulbs I am not that worried. :)

  • 1 year later...

Hi  I cited Philips extreme. After 5 months they blew.I believe this is a common fault. I am going to fit ring130.
