Fiesta Not Running Right

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a Fiesta 03 1.4 petrol. It has a problem that occures every now and again. It runs very eratic and stalls when you let off the power ie coming up to a junction. Like I say most times it starts up and runs quite well. Little lumpy idle but that's all. It has just recently had the top end repaired due to the cam belt snapping. I have replaced spark plugs and ht leads and made sure all pipes are connected securely. I have a warning light on that points to the alternator smart connector but there is no problem with a flat battery so I assume it is being charged correctly. I have also just put a new battery on. I have taken it back to the garage several times but they cannot seem to get to the bottom of the problem. I hope someone can help and thanks for reading this.

Many thanks

Andy

Electrical gremlins can be a nightmare,

Try taking it to a different gatage for assessment if they dont find anything then i( sell it onwards with receipts

Many thanks for the reply. Selling is not an option at the mo. I am reluctant to take to a garage also as this can cost lots of money. So it is something I am trying to sort myself.

When you say it runs eratic to you mean it is hunting when idling? Sounds like it coukd be your idle control valve if it is stalling out of gear, try taking it off and giving it a clean with carb cleaner.

I dont think the fault code is linked to your issue

Thanks for your reply

I have just noticed that the small bore hose (vacuum?)that should fit onto the bottom of the pressure control valve has been disconnected. But if I replace it the car runs worse. Should I replace the PCV.

Cheers.

I would try cleaning the idle control valve first and see if it makes a diffrence. If it is cutting out when coming to a junction etc it sounds like its not doing its job by keeping the revs up, i have had this issue with cars in the past it also causes the revs to hunt.

only other things i can think of is air leaks but i dint think the pcv has anything to do with air intake directley

Hi

I can't seem to find the ICV. I wonder if this model does not have one. Thanks for your help.

Saying that from what i read mk6 fiestas are drive by wire so wont have an icv, i would double check all air and vacum hoses

It may be the electronic throttle control unit is becoming faulty?

You could try sourcing a known working used part rather than new, i wouldnt imagine they would be cheap.

I know you dont want to take it to a garage but you coukd get them to try to read live data from the ECU and see if it is working ok

I second the idle control valve problem. My 1.25 mk5 had the same issue - a clean/soak with brake cleaner sorted it out. Mine was located under the air filter (air filter on mine is on top of the engine, not to the side) - a few plastic covers to remove and you'll see it. It'll have a wire and a few hoses attached.
