1.6Tdci, Am I Going To Have Problems?

Featured Replies

I have a 2009 Focus 1.6tdci with the DPF. When I bought it it last February it had 67k on the clock. Full service history (mostly main dealer) since then it been due one service which I had done by a main dealer to get the Free Breakdown cover offer. I have no faith in our local dealer from previous experience so took it to one near work. Not to go into details but it's never going back there again as the next day when I got to work there was a large pool of oil underneath. Had been leaking from the filter housing.

I do most of my maintenance and have changed the oil etc. on more cars than I can remember i'm therefore planning to do the same with this car. I've looked around the internet just to see if there's anything special to be aware of and have seen all sorts of horror stories regarding the turbo's blowing etc.

I know people are keener to post good stories over the bad but do I need to be worried? I do around 20 - 25k miles a year. My normal work commute is a 70 mile round trip mostly on a roads with a few slower roads at each end. I'm going to be using decent oil (planning on Castrol Magnatec) and branded parts.

Do I need to be worried. I'm planning to hold onto the car for the next 4 years so will be putting some miles on it and i'm concerned that it's going to cost me a fortune if I want it to last or is it likely to be ok as long as I keep on top of the oil etc? I was thinking of changing it every 8k.

Hi! I run 2000 Turbo diesels within my driving school. when got my first one I was a bit worried with the high mileage expected. I decided to change the oil and filter at 10k (half the recommended service interval) I use Shell Helix Ultra 5-40 . In seven years I have not had any internal engine or turbo problems.

If you think we are talking learners as in "slow and gentle," forget it. We train advanced drivers privately and for the North west Ambulance Service. so we are not hanging about.

My current car is running perfectly well at 208k. Yes! 208k. So fear not. Good quality oil changed frequently will pay you back in the long run.

oh! And keep the oil always at the top mark on the dipstick. larger volume of oil visits the hot spots less frequently and helps with cooling, particularly the turbo.

Hope this helps!

Good Luck!

Steve :-).

change the oil a lot, im sticking to 6k, but others go for 8, I wouldn't leave it as long as 12.

The issue is carbon build up which ends up in the sump then gets blocked in a tiny little filter in the banjo bolt on the end of the oil feed pipe going to the turbo.

Block off the EGR valve, change the oil a lot, watch out for injectors leaking, give the engine time to warm up before booting it and allow some wind down time before you turn it off.

I went a bit further and sorted my DPF out and have some custom parts on the way to stop some of the oil getting ingested via the breather pipe. you could look in to having the Sump removed, cleared out, turbo feed pipe replaced and the banjo bolt "fixed" as well. look aafter it well and its unlikely to give you bother.

Welcome to Turbo paranoia syndrome!
