Steering Lock Won't Engage.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Recently bought a 2006 Ford Focus 1.8i Sport with Keyless Go. Car is brilliant to drive, really good upgrade from the previous motor.

I have one or two niggles (don't we all with a new 2nd hander?) and the main gripe is that the centre panel on the dash is staying illuminated permanently. Upon turning off the ignitition, you hear a chime and a message on screen reads "Engage Steering Lock" but the lock will not engage. No matter how much you turn the steering wheel, the lock doesn't engage.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this and where to look please?

I do have some ELM327 code readers (one wired and one bluetooth) but not had chance to plug into the car to read anything just yet. Could really do with some pointer though.

Cheers,

Gaz

Hi Gaz

I have a 2010 focus with keyless system but when I stop the engine after a few seconds the steering lock solenoid engages. There is no message that says Engage steering lock at all. Sorry that's all I can tell you, may be some else knows more.

You could try giving the steering wheel a quick wiggle once you've turned the ignition off, in case there's a problem with alignment between the steering column and the lock. Sometimes an amount of tension builds up in the steering system as a result of the tyre acting bit like a spring, though that more commonly causes problems for releasing steering lock not putting it on.
