Mk1 Nsf Wheel Bearing: How Difficult?

Featured Replies

Is it something that a passably competant amateur can do (i.e. Moi), or am I better off farming it out for someone else to swear at? If the former how long should I allow for the job? If the latter how much do you think it'll cost?

Hi, if you are able, you need to take off the complete hub carrier, then have the bearing pressed out then the new one pressed back in, take the hub with a new bearing to a garage, they should press it for you, for about £10. then just refit the carrier.. as for time, if you take it off and with no problems around an hour, and around an hour to refit, if you have problems it could take you half a day, I have done this job loads of times some have been quick and others have taken longer, due to seized nuts or bolts. at the end of the day it all comes down to cost. and how much you want to pay out to get the job done..

I agree with Alan, I have had many wheel bearings pressed in/out at garages for a tenner until I got fed up and bought my own press (now I can charge the tenner haha)

If you can get someone to press the bearing, its not a difficult job but you will need a selection of basic tools.

Me as well Stef, I also got fed up with paying to have it done, got a nice 12 ton press now, and all the bits to go with it.. :D not much good for Gen 2 type bearing. :( lol

I don't want to brag and sound like 'my dads bigger than your dad' n all that but I went for a 20 tonne press, so far I have been to around 10 tonnes or just over probably doing bearings.

Your absolutely right, although I have done a gen 2 for a VW on it (72mm IIRC). I have the gen 2 kit for 78mm ford bearings though.

A 78mm Gen 2 kit is next on my wish list.

I picked mine up on ebay for about £80 brand new (sykes pickavant)

That's a good price, I will have a look, thanks Stef

Taking the hub off isn't something that particularly worries me. It was the "Getting the old ones out, new ones in" issue I was concerned by. Poo, as I don't have a bearing press. Anyone know somewhere in or near East Herts that can do it?

Is it an option to buy a part from ebay or a breakers and take a gamble the bearing is ok? I did that once and then sold the old part which I had refurbished and got my money back - not really an option without a press but getting hold of another part saves you the hassle of finding someone who is willing to do the bearing.

I thought of that, Stef, and wondered if there's a place that does complete hubs with new bearings so you can simply swap out the old one. Probably not, but a nice idea.

I got it done at a local Independent garage for 85 quid. I decided I'd let someone else swear at it. :)
