Can I Modify My Car If It's On Pcp?

Featured Replies

Can anybody tell me if I'm allowed to modify my car if it's on a PCP contract? I just want to do some cosmetic work?

You can but if you intend handing it back at the end of your contact you might be asked to reverse them

I am looking at getting my alloys resprayed but can not find anywhere to do them around my area. I was told tinting back lights was an mot failure don't know if this is right.

They're not your wheels, they're not your lights, they're not your badges - at the end of the day, it's a hire car! - of course you can't change them!?!?!

Sorry but I disagree. My son is on options and asked the salesman at time of order and he confirmed that he can do anything he wants as the car is in his name (check your v5). If and its a big if he wants to hand it back ford in effect buy it off you for the GFV less or plus any residual value dependant on condition mileage etc. if you decide to keep it you pay the balance off and that's it.

Yea I might go in to the dealer and ask to make sure before I do anything, but whatever the car is like when I hand it back, they have got money off me for 3 years and then get the car back which they will sell so they are getting the best deal out of it either way!

The V5 notes only the registered keeper, not the legal owner.

MOT Testers manual

1.1 Front and Rear Position lamps and Registration Plate Lamps

A. Front and Rear Position Lamps must not be obscured and must show light of the correct colour

1.5 Reflectors must not be obscured and must show red to rear.

IMO if you tint/paint excessively then remember when you leave your car on the side of a road, the only thing that is illuminated are your reflectors by other cars headlights. Same with other lights, as soon as you get into a situation with fog/heavy mist, your lights lose even more "light".

Just my opinion obviously, but I would never tint any lights, front (or rear) windows or windscreen on my own vehicle - I like to be seen, and I like to see (especially on dark country lanes at the dead of night!)

My ZS is on pcp and I specifically asked 2 salesmen and my mate (another salesman) and all 3 confirmed that you can do whatever the hell you want to it IF your going to keep it or trade it in for something else. Instead of the GFMV it'll be looked at as a part exchange so in theory it could work out in your favour if the mods are desirable, if they aren't, you may be worse off.

If your circumstances change though and you have no choice but to hand it back, they'll expect it to be handed back in the same condition (minus wear and tear obviously.) So make sure anything you do, can be put back to original.
