1.6Tdci Cmax - Hesitation Between 1700 & 2000Rpm

Featured Replies

Morning all,

As the title suggests i have an 04 plate 1.6 TDCI Cmax which has developed a hesitation every now and then between 1700 and 2000 rpm. It seems to happen on light acceleration just before the turbo kicks in and there is a plume of smoke when the hesitation clears (its almost like there's a blockage).

I've been trying to research what the causes could be. I don't have a DPF installed (according to the VIN plate) so i'll be searching for more split pipes and i'm considering blanking the EGR.

I just have a few questions:

1) Can anyone think of anything else the hesitation could come down to? (quite an open ended question no doubt!)

2) Are there any risks to blanking the EGR other than the engine management light?

3) To blank the EGR do you need to remap the ECU?

In case its relevant, i've already replaced the same pipe as the one that's split in the link below as mine was also split and causing a boost leak.

Hi there. I used to get a slight hesitation on mine about the same revs as yours, like it was holding back for a second then it would go, I tried to clean the egr by removing it but couldn't get to the last bolt, I brought egr cleaner and sprayed the whole can in the egr, pipe work connecting to the egr and also the pipe work just after the air filter. I did this for a few months and the hesitation went completely gone. Every know again I spray egr and turbo cleaner in the inlet pipe after the air filter and also in the inlet manifold just to clear it out.

I to have blanked the egr but it has a 10mm hole so that the MIL light doesn't come on and it does improve the smoothness and slightly better mpg, the ECU doesn't need remapping.

Hi Steve, I'm a new member but i'll take a stab at it. i have a 2006 1.6tdci and over 12 months ago i had similar problem. according to other forums it can be your maf sensor (mass air flow sensor). easy way to find out is to unplug it and take it for a spin. if car runs smoothly and response is good this may be the fault. i have been running mine with it unplugged for over 12 months and it's been great. averaging 55mpg so no loss on economy and it is smooth and very responsive and seems better with the maf sensor unplugged. you may think why i didn't get a new sensor. well their not cheap and considering the oil fouling on these over a period of time it could fail again. so i didn't bother and i'm happy with it as is. another thing you may be drawing air in the fuel supply so i'd check for leaks. also i had a non start problem recently and understand the fuel filter has a non return valve in it which stops the fuel leaking back into the tank. so i didn't change the filter i bought a hand priming pump on ebay £4.95 and fitted it between the supply hose on the fuel filter. pumped it several times and bingo starts first time every time. P.S. i have blanked my egr valve, they foul the engine rocker with exhaust crap. my focus has done 165,000miles and the engine runs like a new one. hope this helps best of luck.
