U.s.b Car Socket

Featured Replies

Just found out that the u.s.b socket turns off when ignition goes off.

But when i plug it into my dash cam the cam don't auto record, all comes on

and works fine but think it's wanting to move files etc.or read files.

How is this when my cigarette lighter is a mini u.s.b into the camera.

Is the u.s.b only for files and charging, bit comfused on this.

The cigarette light is a power supply only, the USB port can transfer data mainly music, iPod etc so the car might be trying to read the files on the camera.

Have you thought about connecting the camera to the fusebox using a piggyback fuse holder? You won't have any wires on show ant it frees up the usb and cigarette lighter.

No,didn't know there was one.

Another thought, could you run a feed then from under the gear stick surround onto the

back of the u.s.b wires with in-line fuse ( live and neg) say like scotch lockes.

Like either a kit for the camera or another u.s.b/cigarette hole.

Why this way as it's easy for me to do and i know that the u.s.b.feed in works off ignition.

Personal preference. I know they're quick but I'd never use those scotch locks again. They can be unreliable. If that's those blue plastic things that slice the cable.

Yes mate it's them,i don't like them that much but could this be an option with some other way then to

join the wires.

The hard wire kit is o.k but with another cigarette lighter somewhere ?? fitted you have best of both.

Direct power off the one in now and ignition off the other, then a choice of what you want.

For my camers I fitted a 12v socket behind the glove box and connected it to the fusebox using a piggyback fuse holder, it is the easiest way to do it and safer than scotch blocks, also you not breaking any wires or insulation.

One of these

Connected to the red of one of these (cut clips off), black goes to an earth, there is a screw above the fusebox.

They'll be fine, you don't need the inline fuse holder that comes with the socket though.

Is this the right fuse piggyback as its not the mini one or should it be this one.

Yes, it needs to be a mini like in your post above.

If you've not read this thread it should help

Yes mark i did read it but still went and got the wrong one lol

Thanks a lot, will cancel one and order the other.

If you just wanted to use the built in USB port, you could use one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/PortaPow-Fast-Charge-Adapter-iPhone/dp/B00K4XR3LW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1424697461&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+data+blocker

And select the Universal option to get the one that just gives power to whatever is connected. That way the camera will not go into data mode. Or use the cig lighter socket if it's ignition switched. I agree with others about hard-wiring though, now that I've had it done it's definitely the way to go. Just make sure you have a fuse for your new circuit, that was my mistake not knowing how the fuse piggyback works.

I'm putting another cig lighter under the dash in the same way the hard wiring is done from fuse.

My cig lighter is direct so i want ignition option, was going the hard-wire way but the cig option give me

more options as i can use anything then as Hard Wire is mini u.s.b and thats it for selected items.
