Mk1.5 Focus Build Log

Featured Replies

Hi guys thought I would get started on my build log, a fair amount of work has been carried out already replacing parts and adding extras but none of the bodywork, I will be uploading the few before pics I have of my focus along with many after pics as soon as I take them!

Little Bit of History

1.6 16v Zetec mk1.5 (52 reg) Panther black

3rd owner of the car and it has more paperwork than you could shake a stick at! Every M.O.T and full service history. I bought it in August 2014.

Bodywork wise not a patch of rust, some lacquer cracks in the bonnet, roof and rear quarters, scuff on back bumper where the previous owner reversed into something and someone has gone a bit cray cray with a touch up stick near the petrol cap. (reading this back I'm making it sound hideous, it's not that bad but it's worth a mention)

At the time of writing this (15/4/15) my focus is in the garage having a full service, cambelt, water pump mechanic found a slight leak coming from the head gasket so having that re-skimmed and repaired (family friend so all work being done for a reasonable price).

when I bought the focus it was a blank canvas 100% stock

here's what's been done to it so far;

  • Tinted windows 80% black
  • 3" sportex exhaust
  • ST170 half leather interior
  • Black headlights + xenon HID kit
  • Black Lexus rear lights
  • Black reverse + fog lights
  • Smoked side repeaters
  • M3 style mirrors
  • Sparco gear knob
  • Pioneer head unit + Sub and speaker replacement
  • ST kick plates
  • Carbon wrapped door pillars and mirror base plates
  • 16" anthracite grey 5 spoke alloys
  • Strut brace (Front upper)
  • K'n'N air filter

I've got quite a few items ready to fit once I get it back which are as follows;

  • Team Heko wind deflectors
  • Colour coded door handles
  • ST170 pedals
  • ST170 clocks
  • ST170 front fogs (top of my list right now)
  • RS Steering wheel
  • WRC spoiler
  • RS Mk2 bonnet vents
  • LED festoon bulb (blue)
  • 30mm lowering springs

My uncle is a dab hand with a spray gun and has offered to repair the bodywork, I've had the paint mixed bought all the materials needed to prep and respray the panels where the lacquer has cracked and the scuff on the back bumper, as well as painting the spoiler and vents (bump strips in the door need to be colour coded or carbon wrapped, undecided yet)

Ideas for future changes;

  • Push button start + Passive Keyless Entry
  • 52mm gauge pods
  • Double din gps stereo
  • Sun strip with FordOwnersClub.com lettering
  • Gel badge overlays (unsure of colours yet)
  • Panther black dash plastics to hide the plasticky look
  • Silicon hose kit
  • Sparco rally mudflaps
  • Mist type water jets (on order)
  • Rear disc conversion
  • Side skirts
  • Front and rear bumper lip/extenders
  • Mesh grilles (DIY Black Honeycomb maybe?)

Thanks for looking, when i get the car back many more pictures of its current condition will go up.

Update #1

Car is back from the garage, all work done over the moon that I'm not driving a Peugeot 206 anymore. tomorrows to do list;

  • Hit the car wash in the morning.
  • Fit wind deflectors.
  • Spray M3 mirrors panther black
  • Spray "Focus" brake cover black
  • Fit ST170 fogs

Here it is about a week after i got it, hated the silver lights (had them down the shed put them in to see what they were like) swiftly changed them to black ones.

Didnt quite get all i wanted done today. But first thing was to get it cleaned.

Then changed the front fog lights to the ST ones, got on the wind deflectors, ST pedals and sprayed the focus light cover black and swapped the interior bulb to a blue led one.

Thanks B4zz, going all black was a much better shout. those silver lights in my opinion looked pretty bad.

Nice that you've taken pride in it. I personally love them standard and am not keen on the boy race look, but each to their own. :)

I think you are doing a great job so far

Like everything except the HIDs in non HID reflector housings.. bad move. Get some projectors fitted. At the minute your HidS will produce less usable light then your halegons did.. no matter what you think.. the beam pattern is entirely different and requires either HID designed reflectors or Projectors! It's an hours job tops to install projectors. Ive a guide on my profile

Update #2

Picked up a Debadged front mesh grille, front and rear body kit style bumpers today from ebay pretty cheap, they need a bit of work reinforcing the fiberglass where some hairline cracks have appeared but nothing major, and decided on a full respray for the car (Same colour) over the next few weeks will be putting all of the pieces together.

Its gonna pain me to see my car in 3 different colours and with patches of filler where car park dings are being flatted out looking like something Frankenstein has created but it will be worth it in the end, during this time it will be known as 'FrankinFocus'

@GingerFlame Thanks for your advice, got the HID kit for free so thought i would give it a blast. I've since bought some Osram nightbreaker plus bulbs, just need to get round to fitting them :)

I'm loving what you've done so far as I'm just starting to plan what I want to do to my 52 plate focus. Can I ask where it is your finding these parts? Looking forward to seeing more pics.

Hi Luke, all of the parts have been sourced through eBay from people breaking st170s.

Found this seller through eBay who are fairly decent on their prices.

Update #3

Been a slow few weeks not got much of the bodywork done, but the respray should be done at the end of June, in the mean time though have done some bits n bobs, firstly bought an RS steering wheel on Ebay, was a little worn but it didn't bother me too much cause i planned to dye the light blue parts to make it match a bit better with the ST170 interior. which came out pretty well.

painted the vents rings, centre console and binnacle around the clocks in a light blue, first time painting these, happy with the result. sanded them all down with some 1200 wet n dry, cleaned them up with some oil and grease remover, primed with an all surface primer and finished it off with an all surface paint from BnQ £10 job which i feel has transformed the inside of the car, know its not gonna be everyone's cup of tea but i like it. :)

Bonded on the WRC spoiler i bought a while back, half a tube of tiger seal and a couple of clamps, after 24 hours its stuck like !Removed! to my surprise, before the respray I'm gonna hit the spoiler up with some filler and mold it in to try and get a cleaner finish on it.

And finally for this update, i bought a black sunstrip and a ford logo vinyl for the front window, precut and took about 10 mins to fit.

Update #4

Bonnet Vents are installed. just need to mold them in, not sure if fiberglass or filler will be the most suitable due to it being on the bonnet and having a fair amount of heat exposure, any advice from anyone would be greatly apprieciated.

11351152 10153919757514622 6715157535012409943 N

11402940 10153920745219622 7750036935532924153 N

Back bumper is on but still needs a few minor repairs and needs to be molded back in a little as the previous owner didnt do a very good job, felt it would be better to do this on the car as the bumper would be totally ridged from being fixed in place.

11406874 10153919757879622 7200556390375377453 N

the exhaust is currently pressed against the bottom of the bumper, ive got some replacement rubber hangers which are about 40mm longer to push the exhaust down will fit those asap, the plan is to make a heat shield to from some aluminium at some pint.

10289888 10153920745074622 2437417027998812326 N

While the wheels were off decided to sand off the drums and paint them back just to seal them in and cover the rust :)

Next part of this build will be the refurb on the bumpers, the molding of the vents and spoiler, the front bumper will be changed on the day that the respray happens due to needing to take out the headlights to change it.
