Modifying Bulb Bases

Featured Replies

Got a plan forming with some lighting mods but I don't really want to be changing bulb holders - has anyone ever tried modifying the base of say a P21W bulb to turn the pins into being offset or vice versa?

When I detangoed I bought the wrong bulbs and only had clear ones.. so I cut a pin off some cheap Orange bulbs temporarily. You couldn't even tell

I've got some spare standard bulbs so may experiment with some of those then.

Cheers :)

is this possible?

as i have some cree bulbs i wouldn't mind swapping the bases for a different fitment

From personal experience with my car Id prefer to modify the bulb due to the location of the contacts in the plug etc

Not got any further with this yet apart from a failed attempt to add a pin onto a bulb base with solder, could work better rubbing it down first and maybe using some extra flux. Or another option would be creating a pin with a very small screw such as those used for glasses etc.

Will see how either of those work out on a standard bulb before I buy any more pricey versions.

Got a sample bulb modified now using a spectacle repair kit from Maplin and a dinky ickle 1mm drill. hoping to try it for size in a bulb holder tomorrow depending on the weather.

Got this little mod sorted now - all fairly straight forward really.

Made up a template to mark the angle of the new pin needed on the bulb, filed off one of the original pins then drilled a 1mm hole in the base of the bulb. With the maplin kit the larger of the 2 types of screw supplied had a head size close to that of the pin needed so used one of those.

Think the hole size needed for those screws is actually just over 1mm but that size was the only small drill bit I could find in the garage. So had to very slightly open the hole with the tip of a cross-head screwdriver. Even then it was a very fiddly process to get the screw to bite into the casing of the bulb and thread it's way in. Put a tiny bit of loctite on it just to be safe.

Will see if I can get photos of the new brake light bulbs when I can get an assistant to operate the brake pedal and I take photos :)

I wanna see if this works

Believe me it works :)

Not sure if I can embed the video on here but this link should work anyhow.

Just ignore the bit where my foot slipped off the brake pedal

Only downside I'm finding from this now is that the brake lights cause some interference when listening to analogue radio, i.e. FM.

Not a massive issue I'll admit.

Are you sure its from this or just from using possibly cheap immitation LEDs? Not saying they are.. Just a suggestion? :)

It's definitely from the brake lights I put in, they're pukka CREE bulbs (with dual polarity etc) but remember now that they did the same when I was using the thems in the rear foglamps. Which reminds me I need to order a new pair to go back in the rear fogs. Cheers :)
