Enabling Auto-wipers In Mk4.5 Mondeo

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have all the wiring already fitted and the correct windscreen, so I'm hoping this weekend to fit the rain sensor to my Mk4.5 Mondeo. As far as I know the auto lights should work straight away with the new headlight switch (with auto position), but I'm not sure about the auto-wipers?

Reading through various forum posts it seems that I have to enable auto-wipers in the configuration page using ELMconfig, but this is where I am confused, some post have stated versions that do not work, so is there a version that others have used with success?

Also it seems that you have to write to two locations the BCM and IPC, is this correct?

Lastly how safe is doing all this with ELMconfig, loads of posts saying that all the dash warning lights start flashing when you start writing to the modules?

In my mind it seemed like an easy modification, especially with my car already having the wiring, etc.

Thanks,

Right I'll answer my own post, hopefully it will help others if they find themselves in the same situation.

I have completed the upgrade of my Mk4.5 Mondeo with Auto Lights/Wipers and Auto-Dimming Mirror.

It was straight forward, my car already had the wiring and correct windscreen, so it was just a matter of sourcing the sensor, mirror and headlight switch from eBay. Fitting took all about 20-30 minutes, hardest part was ensuring there were no air bubbles under the sensor. Mirror changed over and plugged in and plastic cowling refitted. Headlight switch was removed by going from the coin tray/diagnostic port compartment, and easily unclipped and pushed out and replaced.

From the start, the auto-lights worked as expected when in the auto position, but the wipers remained on Intermittent and were not auto.

So this is where I picked up the courage to try ELMConfig, version I used was 0.2.10 and it connected to the car. Got a bit confused as most of the guides on the forums seem to be for the Focus, saying you have to change items in GEM, which the Mondeo doesn't have! This is what I did;

  • On the BCM button I did a quick 'Read' on the Information page to ensure it was connected
  • Then on the Procedures page I clicked 'Read CCD from BCM', now this was a nerve-racking time, notification alarms went off and I had warning messages and engine management warnings on the Instrument Cluster display.
  • Once my heart-rate had calmed down I clicked the 'Central configuration' button on the left
  • First thing did a 'save CCD to file' so that I had a backup if needed.
  • On Page 2 where it stated 'Without rain sensor', I changed this to 'Rain Sensor'
  • On Page 3 where it stated 'Without Auto Lights', I changed this to 'With Auto Lights'. Even though my lights already worked on Auto, I thought there may be other stuff that requires this setting?
  • Then I went back to the BCM button and in Procedures, did 'Write CCD to BCM'
  • More warning lights and tones, heart-rate jumped :)
  • Completed write and that was it.

Turned the Ignition off and then back on and started the car, no error messages or warning tones. Tested the lights and wipers and they now work with the sensor. Word of caution, don't test the wipers by throwing a glass of water at the sensor, whilst stood on the drivers side, you will get wet :)

I've taken the car for a drive and it all seems fine, no worse for messing with the settings, so I'm very happy, just need to actually try it in the dark and rain.

Hopefully, as I said, this will help others that already have the wiring and windscreen and want to do a quick and easy upgrade of their car.

Thanks for the write up, and sorry no one could help! Mods, can this be a guide? Certainly good and clear enough!

Thanks Goodkat,

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining over any lack of help, there are probably not many people that have Mondeo's of this age without Auto Lights/Wipers, I'm surprised that mine didn't come with them, although it was an ex-fleet car and they probably chose the cheapest options.

I struggled to find info on how to use ELMConfig with the Mondeo, as most of the guides refer to the Focus, that I thought it wouldn't work. But I was pleasantly surprised that it worked and I don't think I broke anything else (my worst nightmare!). I hope that I did it right, all I can say is that it seems to be working for me at the moment, hoping that somebody will say if I did it wrong or missed something.

Nice guide, i'm sure it will help others who want to fit the auto lights and wipers.

Gavin, I've added your post as a guide in the Mondeo section.

@gjmartin, what engine do you have in your car. I did this to mine & found that afterwards I have problems with stop/start on the car. I found to get round them was have the key in position 1 not in 2. After that it was fine, plus there was no light & sounds from the cluster.

The engine in mine is 1.6l DV6C

Can you let me know what rain sensor you used as I have a mk4.5 fitted the switch but by the looks of where the sensor goes I have a GPS aerial

  • 4 years later...

The rain sensor sits above the GPS antenna. The plug for it should be stuck down under a bit of foam to the headlining.

You will have to drop down the unit that has the alarm sensors to get to 2 torn screws to drop the main unit to get to it.

I'm hoping you're still on this forum (some 8 years after the OP!) - i'm about to fit an auto switch and mirror to my zetec business, and have a sensor coming which was removed from the same car as the mirror (so hopefully it's rain & light!) but i can't find part numbers to confirm.

Thank you for your guide though, it sounds like you've given all the direction i need and I should hopefully have auto-lights by the end of the week - which will be a huge relief as coming from other vehicles with auto lights i keep forgetting to turn them on!

Rain sensor  / Auto wipers never worked as I would like it on my car so I disabled it, my sensitivity adjuster on the stalk now works as an intermittent delay instead...much better for me. Never use auto lights...I know when I need to turn on my lights 😉.

Sorry, not a helpful post. But, years ago people (inc. me) moaned about how crap the auto wipers were on the MK4/MK4.5, hence I disabled it by using ELMconfig.
