Cam Belts And Timing Belts

Featured Replies

Hi can anyone tell me where the cam belt (if one is fitted) can be found on my Ford Focus 1.6 petrol engine, 02 reg, as it was mentioned when the timing belt broke, the one you can see with ribbed grooves along the inside, no teeth. Someone said this is the only belt and I can't even find the cam belt in Haynes manual either.

The cam belt is the timing belt..

Any belt you can see with ribs on is going to be an auxiliary belt (otherwise known as a fan belt, aircon belt, alternator belt etc).

The timing/cam belt will always be on the opposite end of the engine to the gearbox and hidden under covers bolted to the engine.

Usually when the timing belt snaps it takes the engine with it, bending valves etc.

Thanks to those who answered my query. It seems that there is only the one belt, the one with all the pulleys, and is about 1" wide with the ribs going along the length, that is visible on the driver's side of the engine on RHD car. Is there another cam belt hidden away, and where are there any instructions to change and adjust it?

The timing belt is behind the ribbed belt. You need to strip off pulleys, engine mount and any other bits in the road to get near it.

In all fairness, if your unsure then leave it to someone else - an easy job to make a mess of.
