Ran Out Of Diesel Now Won't Start

Featured Replies

Hello guys just had my Ford Focus 1.8 tdci 2010 clutch fixed in the garage as I was pulling away it ran out of diesel, somebody went and got a Jerry can of diesel for me and I tried starting it quite a few times got a few little starts but it kept dying straight after a bit of joy after a while it was closing time and I left it with the garage to sort tomoro.

Should I be worried ?

Any help would be great fellow ford friends

youll need to bleed the system, either by removing the inlet to the fuel pump and using a hand primer or something the garage might have to pull fuel through into the filter, then try starting again.

also use some easystart to get it to fire and keep your foot on the pedals to force some fuel through

last resort you will have to crack open the injector pipes if there is still air in the system

generally you shouldnt run the car too low on diesel as it will put you into issues like this, i fill up at least when the range is telling me i have 100 miles left

another thing is if they removed the fuel filter prior to the replacement of the clutch, to check all the pipes are secure and the fuel filter o ring is properly sealed

As said above. you just need a hand primer to the inlet of the fuel filter and squeeze until it is firm and you hear the fuel returning to the tank.

The common rail is self bleeding, so once the high pressure pump gets fuel it will bleed itself, so no need to open the injector pipes, and i also wouldn't recommend easy start or anything.

I have replaced my fuel filter (1.6tdci) the other day and all i needed was the hand primer to fill the new filter and about ten more squeezes just in case !!

You should know, though that leaving the high pressure pump without fuel is leading it to early grave !!

Garage won't have a problem getting it started but if it happens again at home get yourself a small syringe the type that comes with the ink refills for printers prime the filter through top nipple if your not in a position to take filter cap off then prime the hose to the pump and it should start don't Rev it just let it tick over for say five mins .

Did it this way on mine after filter change and had no probs and keep the syringe in the car just in case .
