Is My Clutch Going

Featured Replies

Hello. Hopefully someone will be able to help with my question. I have a 2002 Ford Focus LX 16V with about 112k on the clock. When driving locally yesterday stopping at traffic lights or in traffic I noticed my revs being higher than normal and continuing to stay quite high for a few seconds , even in neutral , before dropping down again . Is my clutch on its way out? Thanks in advance for any advice,

Bernie

Few things to test for clutch slip.

5th gear at 30mph, if the clutch is slipping the revs will increase without the car increasing speed at the same rate.

Park somewhere and apply the handbrake on full, then try rocking the car on the bite point as if you were going to pull away, same thing will happen if the clutch slips, revs increase when they shouldn't.

You can also try a hill start, but you need to make sure you are not going to be stranded if the clutch is slipping too much.

If you are stationary and revs are high, I wouldn't suspect clutch though. I'd be thinking something else, like idle control valve, etc...

Idle control valve or vacuum leak will probably be the cause of 'hanging' revs. Much cheaper than a new clutch!
