Advice Need - Ford Focus

Featured Replies

Hi - i'm currently looking at Ford Focus for sale and any advice I would be grateful:

Car details

Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec (Climate Pack)

07 Plate

55,400 miles

£3000

It is at a reputable dealers and is in pretty good condition (apart from a few small scratches), so i'm happy in terms buying from this dealer.

I'm wondering:

Has anyone had any major problems with this version?

It states 40 mpg - what is more realistic?

Any other advice?

The 1.8 is a very good engine as it is a ford built engine, rather than a peugeot unit. The only thing I didnt see was petrol or diesel.

Anyway, the car overall is a very good motor and as long as it has a service history to backup its asking price, it would be a good investment. There are however inherited problems (there is a MK2 Focus Common Issues Thread here) which otherwise can be repaired easily enough or catered for.

As it's already been said I'd check out the MK2 common problems thread if I were you so you know what to look out for.

What's the climate pack exactly, aircon?

It is a petrol. I don't know actually know what the climate pack is to be honest. But I know the car does have aircon. I will look at that thread now.

Many thanks

Basically it's Aircon with a pollen filter. That's about all I found on my old mk2 focus lol

I think you might struggle to get 40MPG, unless you only drive it at a constant 40-50 MPH all the time. The 1.8 is thirstier than the 1.6, and doesn't offer that much power increase (+23 HP only) for the tradeoff of increased fuel consumption in my opinion. If 100PS is enough for your needs, I'd go for the 1.6 instead. I have the 1.6, and although it's no Mustang, it's still enough to keep up with right-lane motorway traffic.

I suggest you test drive both 1.6 and 1.8 versions, and see if you can live with the 1.6, or if you prefer the 1.8.

with the climate pack you get the heated front windscreen

Regarding mpg just for some context i have the 1.6 automatic and i cant get anymore then 33.5 mpg no matter how much i nurse it.

Forgot about that!

Love the heated windscreen. Its one of the most useful features I have ever had on a car.

Regarding mpg just for some context i have the 1.6 automatic and i cant get anymore then 33.5 mpg no matter how much i nurse it.

I also have the 1.6 petrol with automatic transmission - on a 100 mile round-trip yesterday, I achieved 42.7 MPG :)

I have a MK2.5 with the 1.8 petrol.

Generally around town I seem to be getting around 30-35mpg

Motorways can see it rise to 37-40 (depends on speed)

Heading down the M1 last week I managed somewhere around 45 (stuck doing 50mph forever and ever and ever lol)

It is possible to improve on those figures - I'm a horror for rapid acceleration, excess junk in the car, leaving the roof bars on, windows down or AC on etc (basically everything you're not supposed to do lol)

I'd say that exact same as my mpg seanw spot on

It's interesting seeing this as I have a Mk2 2.0 petrol. I get 35mpg around town. 40mpg on motorways and recently managed to squeeze out 50.0mpg over 100 miles driving 50-60mph.

As with most lower powered car the 1.6 engine is not supper economical on motorways. More torque is needed hence the 2 litre does better. I have a 1.6 newer 125ps unit and it's very good but on the motorway mpg is little better than my old 3litre jag!

The ave Mpg figures are based on since its last reset back to 0. Couple people I know didn't know that. I'm not sure about the instant fuel figure as my car hasn't got that I don't think

Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC

Climate pack is heated windscreen aircon heated front washers heated wing mirrors and rear heated screen mpg is around 36 mpg less if town driving more on motorways
