Clunking Sound From Front When Changing Gear And Whistling When Turning.

Featured Replies

Hi, i wonder if anyone can help, recently i started to hear a clunking noise when i was pulling off or changing gear, not very loud but but definitely can hear it.

I also have started hearing a slight whistling noise when turning the wheel, someone mentioned check the power steering fluid and it is at the correct levels, but a few years ago i hit the curb and needed to have a ball joint or something fitted to the tracking rod as my left wheel would not turn or move, but could that be anything to do with the whistling and clunking sound? maybe it has come loose or something?

As you can tell i am useless around cars.

thanks for any help.

P.S it's a ford focus MK2 is it makes a difference.

That's not really something we can diagnose over the internet unfortunately.

The clunk could be any number of suspension or steering parts, or even engine or exhaust mounts. It needs someone to physically poke around to find something worn or loose, a mechanic mate or trusted garage maybe. It's unlikely to be the track rod end (ball joint that you had replaced), they can't really just come loose and I've never seen one wear out that quickly.

As for the whistling, is it more of a squeak or whine? Does it do it when stationary or moving only? If its a squeak it's likely to be related to the clunk and be a failing bush or ball joint. If its a whine its more likely something to do with the power steering, either low fluid or a worn pump or motor, you say the levels are fine so I wouldn't worry about that until it gets worse personally. Could also be wheel bearing if its only when moving.

I have a Mk 3.5 diesel ... the gears clunk on changing up ... told it was a feature of the car!
